Pinata, the upcoming collaborative album between Freddie Gibbs and Madlib has had the rap underground salivating for awhile. It’s still not here yet, but “Deeper” is the latest release from the unexpected pair and it further demonstrates their chemistry. Driven by a screeching string loop and a blunt thud for a bass line, “Deeper” is the tale of a hardened guy dealing with the loss of a lover after leaving for jail mid-relationship. Gibbs executes the song’s concept with extreme precision, boasting while being perfectly vulnerable. There’s even a surprise twist at the end. According to Potholes in My Blog, the album will be out on February 4, 2014. If you weren’t already looking forward to Black History Month, now you definitely have a reason. Somebody might have jumped the gun. According to the Adult Swim website, Freddie Gibbs and Madlib‘s song “City” wasn’t supposed to drop until July 22nd, but alas, here it is. Characterized by that hazy Madlib sound, “City” features frantic verses from Karriem Riggins and Freddie Gibbs over an instrumental that belongs in a Hannah-Barbara cartoon.

Gibbs and Madlib are supposed to released their collaborative effort Pinata later this year. It’s an unexpected pairing, but if “City,” is a reliable indicator or their chemistry, the project should be fantastic. Furthermore, according to Potholes in My Blog, the collaborations for the album are insane. Listen to “City” below.
