Building within the draft and free agency, the Sixers are young and growing. That’s been the case for a few years in the Trust The Process era.

Now the wins must follow.

Not quite NBA Eastern Conference royalty just yet, the potential with the combination of Joel Embiid, Ben Simmons, J.J. Reddick, Jahlil Okafor, Amir Johnson, Markelle Fultz, Dario Saric and Robert Covington is quite intruiging.

When it comes to culture, shoes and just having common sense about life, Greg Dennis is your guy. Philadelphia’s finest and fashionably conscious, Greg is well versed in advertising, dealing with consumers daily. His interest in all of this became apparent in the 90s when Mecca USA was advertising in The Source Magazine and he hasn’t looked back.

“Mecca’s aesthetic was very aspirational and innovative,” Greg Dennis tells RESPECT Magazine. “Also, it was black-owned. This provided me with hope and gave me the inspiration to pursue a career in this industry.”

In between running the show out at Adidas headquarters in Portland, Oregon, Dennis sat down with RESPECT Magazine about a variety of topics, including how he got started in the business, how his education played a part in his development and entrepreneurship.

Here’s THE SCOOP:

Brandon ‘Scoop B’ Robinson: What was fly fashion and sneaker-wise in Philadelphia when you were growing up?

Greg Dennis: Fly fashion growing up in Philly was: Polo, Nautica, Coogi, Rocawear and Dickies. Each brand served a different purpose; for example Dickies were popular amongst the corner boys and it represented function. The material was super durable, wrinkle resistant and had the appropriate amount of pockets.

Brandon ‘Scoop B’ Robinson: What was your point of entry professionally for you?

Greg Dennis: My point of entry into the industry was interning for Alan Ket and Dre Hayes at Azzure Denim when I was in college. The internship provided me with the opportunity to maximizing my book knowledge in the business world. This opportunity gave me more confidence to enter the industry post college.

Brandon ‘Scoop B’ Robinson: How has the industry evolved from when you started to now?

Greg Dennis: The industry has definitely evolved; when I was coming up there were many independent brands and retail shops. Now there are less players on the brand and retail side. We need small businesses and entrepreneurs to develop new markets and ideas.

Brandon ‘Scoop B’ Robinson:What advice would you give someone looking to do what you do now?

Greg Dennis: For anyone looking to enter into this industry; I highly recommend gaining retail experience. Understanding retail is a great foundation for knowing what motivates consumers to make a purchase and help nurture your eye for product. At the core of my job I am a merchant and enhancing the consumer experience is the end goal.

Brandon ‘Scoop B’ Robinson: What is next the next ‘thing’ that folks should be paying attention to?

Greg Dennis: I believe the future is automation. This will have an impact on transportation, manufacturing and retail. The potential and upside is enormous. Imagine visiting a store that has automation manufacturing capabilities and can build custom product based on your needs. Tech can eventually eliminate waste and reduce our environmental footprint.

Greg Dennis: I know a few people that started successful businesses while being employed full-time. It’s definitely manageable and I recommend going into a business that is not a conflict of interest to your 9 to 5. Having multiple revenue streams a smart play.

Greg Dennis: When it comes to footwear my three favorite shoes of all time are; EQT 93 Racers, OG Gucci Ace’s and Polo Ranger boots. All of the major players in my neighborhood when I was growing up had these shoes. Decades later these shoes are still relevant.

Greg Dennis: I attended Philadelphia University for Apparel Management. PHILAU is the oldest fashion school in North America. This education provided me with the tools to navigate this industry. Without this foundation working in this industry would be huge learning curve.

New York City was the place to be on February 23rd. Moguls in Media took it’s east coast panel to midtown Manhattan’s WeWork Bryant Park.

Celebrity hairstylist, Tiffany Lamb, ESSENCE‘s Brittney Oliver, Black Enterprise’s digital editor, Selena Hill, author, Gillian Hill and entrepreneur, Jacques Bastien participated in a roundtable discussion which detailed their life’s experiences in the entertainment industry.

Additionally, panelists gave their expertise on how to brand yourself, create a work/life balance, networking tools and how to overcome difficult times while following your dreams.

The panel was moderated by Darcel Laurie, Moguls in Media’s founder and sole proprietor. She was elated to bring Mogul’s in Media to the Big Apple.

“NYC is where I did a lot of my grinding at,” Laurie told RESPECT. “I did my first red carpet in NYC, I did my first TV appearance in NYC and so much more. I was honored that I could give back to the city that started it all for me and my career.”

Professionals at Moguls in Media were able to come together for a common goal: networking and learning. Guests at the panel enjoyed music spun on the one’s and two’s by DJ Fab Roc, food catered by Chef Lex and Mogul Margaritas by Star Tenders Bartending School.

“I was humbled to be a panelist at the Moguls in Media tour stop in NYC, Black Enterprise digital editor Selena Hill told RESPECT.

“Sharing the mistakes, insight, and experience I gained throughout my career is the least I can do to give back to others. I was also honored to share the stage with the event creator Darcel and a host of diverse professionals from different walks of life.”

Glam. Dream. Inspire. And T2Fitness were some of the sponsors for the Moguls in media panel. They had products galore for attendees. Aida Sanchez won a Glam Box by Glam. Dream. Inspire. China Dodley won online personal training from T2Fitness for two weeks!

Luxury Footwear Designer Stella Hughes was one of many distinguished guests in attendance.

Walk into any NBA locker room and you’ll hear Drake, Rick Ross, Drake and Jay-Z blaring before and after games. If you walk into a music studio, artists rock jerseys and arm sleeves galore like their favorite players like Carmelo Anthony and recently minted hoops Hall of Famer Allen Iverson. By the way, did you check him out at the Knicks/Bulls game Thursday night? The Knicks got the W, by the way!

Speaking of Iverson and hip hop, he was a trendsetter for real! He intro’ed hoops fans to his fearless play that many like Russell Westbrook and others call their own. Philly rapper Ms. Jade raved about A.I. “I think that Allen Iverson was one of the best players that there was particularly in my era,” Ms. Jade told me on the Scoop B Radio podcast.

“First of all he had the city on smash because he was this little guy that had so much heart. That stood out and I think from his heart that he was passionate about basketball.”

An 11-time All-Star, Iverson finished his career averaging 26.7 points per game, the sixth-best career scoring mark in NBA league history. He left an undeniable imprint on homes across the world because his career was lived on his own terms. Ms. Jade liked the way Iverson carried Philly on his back.

“You knew he was from the hip hop era,” she said. “It made you say ‘oh I can rock with him’ because he reminded you of your cousin or somebody like that.”

Participating artists in this cypher are Wiggz, Scottie Kash, A-Rob, JizzaRaw, Swami Mags, and OneTakeDave. The beat was produced by Foozy. Video was filmed at Rotation Records by Plum Creek Productions.
