The Swedish singer Mapei, born Jacqueline Mapei Cummings, grew up in Rhode Island until her teenage years, when she moved to Stockholm with her Liberian mother and Swedish stepfather. From then on, she was an immigrant in Europe during the school year, and a black girl in America during the summer. As the singer told us a year and a half ago, her early experiences were comprised largely of mixed expectations. Should she be a rapper? Why was she trying to be a pop singer? Where was home for her?

Mapei, it’s safe to say, has since found her voice.
