Since the start of the NBA season, folks have marveled at the play of the Kyrie Irving-led Boston Celtics and the emergence of the rising Philadelphia 76ers, led by Joel Embiid and Ben Simmons.

Also along the Northeast Corridor, the New York Knicks have played inspired basketball with their star Kristaps Porzingis. Also in New York, the Brooklyn Nets have accrued a promising roster with DeAngelo Russell, Spencer Dinwiddie, Allen Crabbe Jahlil Okafor and Caris LeVert. The consistent play of Nets forward Rondae Hollis-Jefferson has been inspiring to watch.

At 30-10, the Celtics are ahead of the pack in the NBA’s Eastern Conference.

Sitting at seeds nine through eleven in the East, the Nets, Knicks and Sixers would not make it into the playoffs. It’s realistic to believe that the Knicks and Sixers could make the cut, when it is all said and done.

But could the Nets join the other three?

Well, it would take a Milwaukee Bucks, Indiana Pacers, Washington Wizards and Miami Heat skid to do so.

I discuss that notion on Chicago’s D & Davis Show. Press play above to listen.

A few days before Christmas and it t’was a busy week. Hey, the Chicago Bulls had a winning streak. 10-21 they can possibly make the playoffs.

Why? They play in a weak East!

We’ve got Kobe getting his #8 and #24 jersey retired. If you say you didn’t watch it you’re a liar. Kobe got 5 rings and a regular season MVP before he retired.

Speaking of LA, LaVar Ball’s starting a new league with high school players for hire.

But it didn’t end there!

The 2017-18 season marks 50 years that the Knicks and Nets have been battling for bragging rights. The Knicks hold a slight advantage in head to head matchups with the Nets.

In 188 meeting meetings, the Knicks have won 95 times and the Nets have won 93 times. On Friday, the New York Knicks and Brooklyn Nets’ matchup resulted in a Knicks 107-86 win at Madison Square Garden and a 30 point, 9 rebound outing for Knicks forward Kristaps Porzingis.

The Knicks win, was the first of their young season.

On February 28, 1993, a nationally televised NBA on NBC game at Brendan Byrne Arena in East Rutherford, New Jersey was memorable for all of the wrong reasons. Former New Jersey Nets point guard Kenny Anderson, broke a bone in his left hand during that regular season home game.

With 8:52 remaining in the third quarter, Anderson stole the ball from Knicks center Patrick Ewing, who was double teamed.

Moving the ball at breakneck speed and almost slipping out-of-bounds on a Nets 3-on-1 fastbreak, Knicks guard John Starks literally bodyslammed Anderson while he was in mid-air.

Anderson landed awkwardly on his back while trying to catch his fall with his hands. A hard play, Starks was assessed a flagrant foul and Anderson would be officially diagnosed with a left wrist fracture. The injury would cost him the remainder of that season, Anderson’s second year in the league.

You can watch the play below.

“Yeah we were rolling,” Anderson told me on Scoop B Radio. “That was my first year under Chuck Daly and he gave me the ball and let me rock. We were in second place.”

It all happened so fast, but Anderson remembers it all like it was yesterday. “I was averaging like 16 [points], 8 [rebounds] and 9 [assists]. We were just rolling man. But it was a bad moment with one of those crazy, 90’s fouls.”

Anderson says the injury and foul are now both an afterthought. “You forgive and you just move on,” he said.

But speaking with Anderson, the nostalgia of the 90s is still there. It’s like it was yesterday.“But when it came to the Knicks and the Nets, that competition just came out of all of us,” he said.

“Those were the Knicks teams with Starks, Oakley, Ewing and my man, Mase. But we were rolling, man and we were really going at each other.”

The 2017-18 NBA season began with rivalry week. On Tuesday, LeBron James and the Cleveland Cavaliers took on the new-look Boston Celtics and James’ old teammate, Kyrie Irving.

On Thursday, the Oklahoma City Thunder’s Carmelo Anthony got the win against his former New York Knicks.

Anthony was shipped to the Knicks in a blockbuster trade in 2011. In that trade, the Knicks sent Raymond Felton, Wilson Chandler, Danilo Gallinari, Timofey Mozgov and three draft picks to the Denver Nuggets in exchange for Anthony, Chauncey Billups and Anthony Carter.

After that trade, the Knicks went 207-269, won only one of four playoff series and missed the postseason each of the past four years.

Years later, the trade makes you wonder: what if?

What if the Knicks hadn’t traded for Anthony and kept a Mike D’Antoni team that had a young core in Amare Stoudemire, J.R. Smith, Danilo Gallinari, Wilson Chandler, Raymond Felton, Nate Robinson and others?

“Well sometimes we talk about it or we meet about it with Amare, Raymond and other players who were there at that time and say if we would have stayed together we could have built something special,” Danilo Gallinari told me on Scoop B Radio.

“So that’s what we say.”

Gallinari, now a member of the Los Angeles Clippers, was drafted 6th overall in the 2008 draft by the Knicks. He had some good games while a member of the orange of blue, like the time he scored 17 points against the Atlanta Hawks on 4-5 shooting from downtown.

There was also that Halloween game in 2009 where he it rained three pointers; eight to be exact. Galo poured in a season high 30 points in the overtime loss and was one triple away from tying a Knicks franchise record held by both Latrell Sprewell and John Starks. The dude was official like a ref with a whistle, he just dealt with substantial injuries.

Nonetheless, his jumper was and still is lethal!

As for the what could have been the Knicks, all we can wonder is what if?

“Yeah, we had a very good chemistry going on,” said Gallinari.

“Especially a few weeks before the trade, we were doing really well. But you know, that’s in the past now.”

Every weekday morning, listeners are treated to the commentary of Charlamagne, Angela Yee and DJ Envy on New York’s Power 105.1 FM’s The Breakfast Club.

Interviews with notables in pop culture like Puff Daddy, Jay-Z, Hillary Rodham Clinton and Kanye West is what makes the show, THE SHOW!

One of the most notable interviews on The Breakfast Club was when Brian “Birdman Williams appeared on the show and told everyone to ‘put some respek on his name.’

“This also proves how big the Breakfast Club is with pop culture,” Breakfast Club host, DJ Envy told me on Scoop B Radio.

“You have people on American Idol saying: are you finished are you done? You had sports analysts and regular TV anchors [saying] are you finished or are you done? That came from a Breakfast Club Interview. You had white kids, black kids, asian kids. You know? You name it, Spanish; watching that interview. People that might not know about the Breakfast Club watched that interview.”

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-172923" data-attachment-id="172923" data-permalink="https://respect-mag.com/2017/10/scoop-b-dj-envy-adds-oprah-winfrey-barack-obama-to-breakfast-club-interview-wish-list/breakfast-club/" data-orig-file="https://i0.wp.com/respect-mag.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/10/Breakfast-club.jpg?fit=1024%2C682&ssl=1" data-orig-size="1024,682" data-comments-opened="1" data-image-meta="{"aperture":"0","credit":"","camera":"","caption":"","created_timestamp":"0","copyright":"","focal_length":"0","iso":"0","shutter_speed":"0","title":"","orientation":"0"}" data-image-title="Breakfast club" data-image-description="" data-image-caption="<p>The Breakfast Club&#8217;s Charlamagne, Angela Yee and DJ Envy.
The show is a major success, but there are a few interviews that are missing from the trio’s accomplishment depth chart. “I would definitely love to do Barack Obama and Oprah Winfrey,” said DJ Envy.

Ah, yes, Harpo’s finest!

Winfrey has been featured in TIME Magazine‘s 100 most influential people, ten times and is the chairwoman and CEO of both Harpo Productions and The Oprah Winfrey Network.

If that isn’t impressive enough, Winfrey is co-author of five books and a philanthropist who started The Oprah Winfrey Leadership Academy for Girls, a school designed to educate and develop the leadership skills of young women in South Africa.

DJ Envy says having Winfrey on The Breakfast Club Would be an honor.

“To see her struggle and where she came from and how she was able to create that huge, huge conglomerate and have it succeed I would definitely love to do that,” he said.

You know you are official tissue paper when Carlton Banks once did his infamous dance to the original theme song of Oprah’s show while Winfrey made a cameo on The Fresh Prince of Bel Air.

Like Winfrey, President Obama also has ties to Chicago.

Creator of the Affordable Healthcare Act, Obama oversaw Al-Qaeda leader, Osama Bin Laden and former Iraq President Saddam Hussein being removed from power. Additionally, the Obama administration provided payment to wronged minority farmers, assisted South Sudan in declaring independence and the former president also passed the fair sentencing act. His journey inspires DJ Envy. “I would love to see what was in his mind as a child that he [thought he] could be President,” he said.

“Because I know when I was a kid, I never thought I could be President. It was never even an inkling in my mind. A black kid from Queens? President?! Come on! That’s something white men do.”

So what’s holding up progress to get them both up there, Envy? “Time,” he said.

“I think we will. I think we absolutely will. We had Hillary Clinton up in here. Who ever would have thought Hillary Clinton would be up in here?”

DJ Envy also says that had Michael Jackson been living he’d easily make his wish list. Not only did DJ Envy talk Oprah and President Obama on Scoop B Radio, he also discussed, Carmelo Anthony, the state of the New York Knicks, Odell Beckham Jr and the New York Giants and how DJ Clue inspired him.

Summer 2003 was big for both Kenyon Martin and Joe Budden.

For Budden, a former cast member of Love & Hip Hop New York and current host of COMPLEX’s Everyday Struggle, his self-titled debut album, Joe Budden released June 10, 2003 via Def Jam.

The Jersey City, NJ representer’s album had hits guest appearances from Lil’ Mo, Busta Rhymes and 112 and had top singles Focus, Fire and the Just Blazed-produced crossover hit, Pump It Up.

June 10, 2003 for Martin was a tad bit different. He and his New Jersey Nets were preparing for Game 4 of the 2003 NBA Finals after dropping Game 3 84-79 to Tim Duncan, David Robinson, Tony Parker and the San Antonio Spurs two days before at Continental Airlines Arena in East Rutherford, New Jersey.

Martin would score 23 points and hauled in 11 rebounds in Game 3. and would would lead all Nets scorers in Game 4 with 20 points and 13 rebounds in New Jersey’s 77-76 win.

The Nets would lose the series 4-2, but K-Mart was the man around the Garden State.

So was Budden.

Jason Birchmeier of AllMusic gave his album four stars out of five, Chris Ryan of SPIN gave the album an eight out of ten and HipHopDX’s K.B. Tindal gave the album a four and a half out of five. Pump It Up was placed on the soundtracks for 2 Fast 2 Furious, You Got Served and EA Sports’ Madden NFL 2004.

Fire even found it’s way on the Mean Girls Soundtrack.

With all of the success going on that summer for said rapper and said NBA baller, can you believe that the two were mistaken for each other in public?

Everywhere,” Kenyon Martin told me on Scoop B Radio.“Everywhere! You name it!”

Martin says that their mistaken identities would mostly happen while he’d go shopping in downtown Newark, New Jersey. “I used to go onto Clinton Ave a lot and in the hood on Clinton Avenue shopping,” he said.

“It would be at a distance and then they would get up on me and see the height differential and say: ‘Oh hey! It’s K-Mart.’”

While you listened to part two of Martin’s interview above, make sure to also check out part one of our discussion. He talked about his Nets days and the 2002 NBA Finals against Shaquille O’Neal, Kobe Bryant and the Los Angeles Lakers. “I have never been afraid when it comes to basketball, period,” said Martin.

“I’m not afraid to mix it up with guards or big men. But that experience there was a good team and we got to, but Shaq was dominant that series. We got to being out there and playing on that level, me holding my own, helping my team and putting them in a position to win. That meant a lot that I was there for my career and my confidence moving forward.”
