Tory Lanez gifts us with “New Toronto” AND “Chixtape 3”

Just hours ago, Toronto’s very own Tory Lanez made a statement on his own. The R&B contemporary artist not only released not one mixtape BUT two mixtapes within the same day. When’s the last time has anyone did that ? Yeah exactly. The best thing about these two projects is that they fit two different sides . During the day, you can bump the upbeat “New Toronto” that features the dope artist rapping bar after bar (Yes he has bars). However during the night, it’s honestly the perfect time to vibe to “Chixtape 3” (my favorite out the two) which is a little more on the sensual side and based off some of our favorite throwback r&b songs. Of course with Torey taking us by surprise with these new projects are going to bring some comparisons and irrelevant controversy but let’s go ahead and look at the facts here. Torey not only just released TWO projects, but he also did a lot of self-production (along with Play Picasso, Sergio R. and more) . That much energy in itself simply tells us that Torey is only concerned about making his own lane and that’s what an artist does. No need to sleep on the new Toronto, well done Tory.

YGG Tay Releases His New Mixtape: “Rich Before Rap”

With new artists constantly taking the scene by storm, Baltimore’s own and Freebandz affiliate YGG Tay is next up and he will be a well known name before the year is through. Tay’s previously released DJ Plugg-produced single “Why You So Mad” has been racking up views since its release back in October and today it finds a home on Rich Before Rap. The new mixtape is filled with 16 tracks that come with work from the likes of Young, Scooter, Metro Boomin, TM88, London On Da Track, Aubz of Mike WiLL’s EarDrummers, and more.

Dom Deshawn Give Us His New Project W/ “Moods & Interludes”

Dom Deshawn has dropped his newest project, titled Moods & Interludes. The 12-track tape features guest verses from Curtis Williams, Cecilia Edoja and more, as well as production from Nate Fox, Brandun Deshay, TrapMoneyBenny & Fly Union’s Jay Swifa. Moods & Interludes is a personal & introspective project, showing Dom’s vulnerable side as he reflects on what it takes to make it in the rap world and the changes he’s going through on his way to the top.

The 10 Best Mixtape Series

Back before mixtapes sounded like albums, artists jacked for beats and enlisted the likes of local and well known DJ’s to assist with their projects. Mixtapes show the development and growth of an artist and nowadays, we often find ourselves in a nostalgic state, wishing that the artist would return to his or her old lyrical flow. For the most part though, we like where the artist is headed lyrically and welcome their newest projects. While some artist today throw projects together for the sake of it, we’ve found that the most interesting projects are those that tell a story or have some type of theme. The series approach is always captivating too. So with that said, we listed the top 10 mixtape series from some of our favorite rappers.

10. T.I. In Da Streetz Series

If you’re looking for Tip’s classic flow and true trap music that ran the sound of the rap genre back in the early 2000’s, take a trip back and listen to the In Da Streetz series pt. 1-3 with P$C.

9. Young Jeezy Trap or Die 1 and 2

Young Jeezy prophesied that when the DJ Drama assisted Gangsta Grillz Trap or Die mixtape dropped he was going to change the game. He later dropped Trap or Die 2 with hits “Lose My Mind” featuring Plies. Needless to say, he was right and the Snowman is still going strong with his recent release of Seen It All: The Autobiography.

8. Meek Mill Dreamchasers Series

Meek gained a loyal following with his Dreamchasers mixtape trilogy, which placed his stamp as a champ in the game. He came through with the first Dreamchasers upon signing to Maybach Music Group in 2011.

7. Curren$y Pilot Talk and Pilot Talk II

Pilot Talk is by far the smoothes mixtape of them all. The production and Spitta Andretti’s laid back flow gained him a loyal following and to this day are waiting on the release of another in the series, Pilot Talk III.

6. Ab-Soul Long Term and Long Term 2

TDE‘s Ab-Soul dropped above average knowledge back on his first Long Term installment, beginning in 2009.

5. Fabolous The S.O.U.L. Tape Series

Fab let his soul glow on The S.O.U.L. Tape series beginning in 2011. This much anticipated series of mixtapes displayed Fab’s lyrical ability if one was to ever question. A live instrumentation version would be greatly appreciated.

4. Big K.R.I.T. See Me On Top Vol.3 and Vol.4

Let K.R.I.T. tell it and this how he really branded himself in the beginning.He must be doing something right because he just added a fourth installment, See Me On Top Vol. 4, just weeks before the release of his 2nd studio album, Cadillactica.

3.Wale The Mixtape About Nothing and More About Nothing

Wale has been impressing us with his run of the Seinfeld influenced About Nothing mixtapes. His clever poetic wordplay and flow of production on these installments led to the creation of his next studio album, The Album About Nothing, which he says is A&R’d by his fans.

2. Lil Wayne Dedication and Dedication 2

Outside of the Hot Boyz, Wayne took the world by storm with his Dedication series, going 5 mixtapes strong. Fans to this day still argue that Dedication 2 is by far the best.

1. Chamillionaire Mixtape Messiah Series

Fans are still riding around with this one and the title says it all. Also, the first installment reigns as the biggest selling mixtape in Texas history. Need we say more?

Mixtape Download: Kilo Kish – Across EP

The rather eccentric singer/rapper Kilo Kish has officially dropped her third EP, Across as it is available on iTunes today! Straying away from the teen-bopper pop sound she’s mastered in her projects prior, Across has a lighter feel. This project follows the serene and freeing theme of a cross-country road trip. With tracks titled “Begin Route,” “On The Way,” and “Destination,” along with the EP’s wickedly impressive Instagram; Kilo Kish definitely took a new approach with this tape and succeeded to say the least.
