After starring in Steven Caple Jr.’s film, The Land, 26-year-old rapper Machine Gun Kelly reunites with the director for his new video “Dopeman” off of the movie soundtrack.

The edgy visual that is heavily influenced by the Purge film series, captures MGK hitting the streets and daringly pulling up on the Dopeman. “After working with Steven Caple Jr. on the movie The Land, it was only right that we collaborated on the “Dopeman” video,” MGK tells Billboard. “I envisioned a cinematic video that I knew he could deliver, and the visuals he presented surpassed my expectations… I think we found the perfect blend of the streets & visual art.”

Released last July, The Land captures the story of four young skaters from Cleveland determined to cause a stir in the drug game. As they become more enchanted by the idea of earning quick money, the boys get tangled up in the fast life. Nas, MGK and Erykah Badu served as the film’s executive producers. When Machine Gun Kelly dropped his sophomore album, General Admission, in the Fall of last year, many deemed the project as a coming out party, of sorts, for him. General Admission displayed a different side of the Cleveland rapper, and was heavy in contrast to his debut effort, Lace Up. “It should have been my first album”, MGK said of General Admission. He proved that he could not only rap, but actually make songs and that was evident on joints such as “Merry Go Round”, “Story of the Stairs” and the subject of this post, “Alpha Omega”, which now has a video to accompany it.

Directed by Ryan Hardy and Ryan Girard, the clip for “Alpha Omega” is a cinematic one, giving us MGK in an abandoned auditorium, surrounded by dangerously tempting women and occasionally drenched in blood. It is a bit sinister, but if you are one of those people who visualizes songs before you see an actual video, this is probably what you would imagine. Not to mention, the imagery actually compliments the song rather perfectly. With lines like, “My music sounds like the devil/Turn that shit off or get out of my temple”, this is easily one of the darker songs on the album, so this what you would want to see.

Of course, Machine Gun Kelly’s rapid fire delivery is present on this song, but instead of rapping fast for the sake of doing so, he is actually saying something. There is no babble here. He mentions plenty, ranging from what it’s like to be from Cleveland and trying to make it out, to his loyal EST fanbase who he backhandedly apologizes for, if one happens to feel their wrath, due to talking sideways about the movement.

Machine Gun Kelly gives us “Almost” to watch, the second video off his quasi-surprise mixtape, “Fuck It.” “Almost” is a brilliantly simple concept, documenting Kells’ messages of desired acclaim and appreciation in an avant-garde manner, impeding a video within an antiquated green television set, circa 1972. MGK’s visuals never disappoint, but even more impressive is his ability to capture viewers (and listeners, obviously) with varying creative styles. Having amassed such a large body of work and youthfully remolding what it means to perform, Kells only asks a few things in return; “Let me smoke my weed in public, eat this In-N-Out Burger, sleep in until motherfu*kin’ noon, and fu*k my b*tch. That’s my perfect world.” Now is that really too much to ask?

Last summer at his annual EST Fest, Machine Gun Kelly handed 5,000 fans a card. On that card, there were many things, including the title of his upcoming sophomore album, which we now know will be called General Admission. There is no official release date, as of yet, but one has to believe that the album will be here sooner than later.

MGK is also gearing up to hit the road, for what is sure to be a high-energy summer tour. Below are the dates. Catch a show, if he’s in a city near you.

In a world filled with drama and turmoil, amongst other things, Machine Gun Kelly aims to uplift, with the self-directed visual to his upbeat, positive song, “A Little More”, which features up and coming singer Victoria Monet.
