Yesterday, it was discovered that Target accidentally put copies of French Montana’s upcoming album MC4 (Mac & Cheese 4) on their shelves for sale, despite having an expected release date of October 14, 2016 according to iTunes.

Due largely in part to the digital landscape in which the music industry is situated, leaks are nothing new and happen fairly often, no matter who you are as an artist. However, Target has taken quite the sizable “L” by releasing MC4 for sale almost two months in advance of its expected release date. While French Montana has not yet made an official statement regarding Target’s massive blunder, its safe to assume this won’t be seen as an ideal turn of events.

According to French Montana himself, the reason for the original push-back for MC4 is the result of certain samples not yet receiving the legal green light. Earlier this week and before Target had made a mess of things, French addressed the push-back on Twitter.

A Twitter user by the name of Matt Elbin was among the first to spot Target’s mistake and re-told his experience through a blog post.

“I went to a Target to purchase Tory Lanez‘ new album I Told You and sitting right next to the album was MC4. I went to the self-checkout and had to receive customer assistance. The employee that came to fix the issue knew the album was pushed back and didn’t allow me to purchase it. After the fact, I contacted another Target employee that I know and he revealed that it is possible to purchase the album despite the pushback. It just depends on the employee you are dealing with.”

It’ll be interesting to see how Target, Epic Records and French Montana handle this delicate situation, fans can take comfort in knowing the project is fully finished and ready to go. Hopefully, this won’t further complicate the albums legal issues.
