New Mixtape: DJ Skarface – MadDILLAiny (Madvillain vs J Dilla)

It’s definitely fair to say that Madvillainy is one of those records that is revisited a tad bit too often, but this particular mashup is a visitation we gladly approve of. Using “audio trickery” to mix vocals from Madvillainy with instrumentals from the late J Dilla, DJ Skarface has completely altered the Madvillain experience, including some original scratches, interview clips and sample drops.

It would have been nice for DJ Skarface to mix some of the original Madlib instrumentals with the Dilla instrumentals rather than just mixing the vocals, but otherwise, the mashup is a success, especially since he mixed more than just the raps; even Stacy Epps‘ haunting vocals from “Eye” appear on the tape. Madvillainy 2: The Madlib Remix Released on Vinyl and MP3

The sequel to Madlib and MF DOOM’s critically acclaimed Madvillainy is finally seeing an official release. Madvillainy 2: The Madlib Remix was originally released in CD form in Madvillainy 2: The Box (2008) and released only with the box set, but there were no official vinyls released. A few white label copies of the vinyl have been in circulation since Madlib did the remixing, but they have been without official artwork. A purchase of the vinyl includes the official artwork, a 12 page comic book continuing the story from the video for “ALL CAPS,” and an mp3 download card. It is quite a deal.
