In Jan VH1 premiered the TV movie (which served as a pilot) based on the book “The Big Payback: The History of the Business of Hip-Hop” by Dan Charnas. The premise of the book documents the rise of the genre as a writer for The Source Magazine, and former record executive.

Starring Wood Harris, Mack Wilds, and Afton Williamson The Breaks is set in the summer of 1990. Chronicling the journey of Nikki and her friends David & DeeVee. The three friends are all navigating their way through the same industry seeking different avenues, but bonded by their love for Hip-Hop.  Dj Premeir served as the projects executive music producer, while scoring and composing for the movie.

The Hip-Hop series just earned its first season from their highly rated test run. “The Breaks” ranked No. 2 for a cable original movie with the combined 2.6 million viewers from its premiere and encore. No set date or episode number has been given yet, but you can expect VH1 to put this on the fast track.

Based on journalist Dan Charnas’ book The Big Payback: The History of the Business of Hip-Hop, VH1‘s original movie The Breaks will depict the early days of hip hop industry in NYC in the 90s. Featuring such actors as Tristan Mack Wilds, Method Man, and Wood Harris, familiar faces are sure to help pull the story together and bring in viewership. The Breaks will air January 4 on VH1.

Seemingly, the R&B crooner Mack Wilds likes to revisit the 90’s. For his latest, aptly titled record “Love in the 90z,” he reminisces about what he used to do in that era. On the smooth nostalgic production, he hits signature R. Kelly notes, and references TLC, Keith Sweat, Michael Jordan, and Jodeci — all great figures from those times. “I’m not big into shooting live shows, but couldn’t miss the Super Bowl of hip-hop this time.  The energy from the fans and the artists was insane. It was great to see the true passion of Hip Hop from both sides.  My press credentials didn’t come through at the last second, which actually worked out for the better–I had to call in some favors and I wound up back stage.  The real show was in the nose bleeds and the floor seats with the true fans.  I also got kicked out of the photo pit, which I’m not mad at, because all the Hot97 photos looked the same.  I literally fought for each shot, I think it gave everything a unique feel.”
“Something else really interesting to me was witnessing all the supporting roles and how hard everyone was working to make this biggest and dopest show in hip-hop work. Not many people get to see the set changes, the bullshit security has to deal with, the technical meltdowns, and everthying that is orchestrated behind the scenses. I saw it, I respect it, and I’m proud of how far hip-hop culture has come.”
