Previously on Mr. Robot….

F Society intercepts an FBI conference call and uncovers that they have been illegally tapping 3 million American’s cellphones without a warrant. Susan Jacobs aka Madame Executioner returns to her home unexpectedly and meets the gang face-to-face. We also learn that Sue was at the trial involving the Washington Township scandal. Darlene has Mobley, Cisco and Trenton dig for anything to blackmail Sue with to keep her quiet. Unfortunately for Sue the dirt wasn’t good enough. Darlene tasers her and watches her drown in her own pool. Soon after we learned she had a heart condition. Cisco and Darlene then cremate Sue to get rid of the evidence. After this incident Mobley is picked up by Dom but is released after being held for over 12 hours. Moments later Darlene discovers Cisco has betrayed her. He is still working with The Dark Army and has been sending them information on her. She then hits him in the head with a bat. The unraveling of information continued in “init_5.fve”.

Last night’s episode (Wednesday, August 31st) started to slowly unravel the truth. We learn that Elliot was arrested for hacking Hansen’s email and stealing his dog. We also learn that Ray was the warden at the prison and Lone Star is a correctional officer. After we are filled in Elliot is released early from prison after serving an 86 day stint. He quickly drops by to visit his mother who is either in a psych ward or nursing home.

Angela continues to hack E-Corp from the inside. She gets unlocks Joseph Green’s account and gathers information from the Washington Township leak. She takes this evidence and turns it over but quickly realizes the people she gave it to are working for E-Corp. Angela quickly exits and returns home where she is greeted by Dom.

Minister Jung meets up with Price and we learn that Jung is the owner of the Washington Township plant. Price informs Jung that he could not secure a loan to keep the plant and the feds will be taking it over unless he can get the Chinese government to loan them the money, interest free of course. Jung does not take the threat too kindly and reminds Price what happened to the last guy that threatened him.

Speaking of The Dark Army, Elliot and Darlene hack White Rose’s right hand man Xun. Elliot has Cisco set up a meeting with Xun. Unfortunately Elliot is not in the best mind frame. He continues to have out of body experiences and Mr. Robot has to step in when Elliot goes into a thousand yard stare. At the meeting Elliot is able to keep it under control and demands Xun have White Rose tell him what Phase 2 is. Shortly after we learn Phase 2 is Elliot’s plan. How did he forget? Did he actually forget or is it all a part of his plan? What is Phase 2?

Darlene also realizes she left behind the VHS tape with her face on it at Sue’s place. Cisco heads back to grab it but encounters someone. Darlene is then greeted by someone, who clearly isn’t Cisco, at Cisco’s apartment. What trouble have these two gotten themselves into now?

Closing out the episode is Tyrell’s SUV pulling in front of Elliot’s apartment. However, Tyrell is not inside. Joanna is. What’s the deal with these two?

Next Week

We see what’s up with Joanna and Elliot

Dom moves in on someone (Elliot? Cisco?)

Phase 2 begins

Meet the Aldersons! Mr. Robot gave us some nostalgia in “master-slave” last night [Wednesday, August 10th]. The episode opened up with late 80s/ early 90s sitcom [think Full House, Family Matters or Married with Children but with a dark twist] saxophone, credits, old USA logo, laugh track and all. We got to see old school commercials from that era during the first commercial break, along with some 90s-style E-Corp branded commercials and Darlene playing with a Gameboy Color throughout the sitcom part of this interesting episode. This is the first time in a long time I actually paid attention to the commercials because of the homage to the era I grew up in.

A few special guests made appearances last night as well. Alf, from the 1986 sitcom of the same name, made a few cameos and ran over Gideon, who played a police officer in this acid trip. Tyrell also made an appearance as special guest “Man in the Trunk”. This world really threw Elliot and us as an audience, for a loop. Elliot was able to hear the laugh track while the other characters either ignored it or couldn’t hear it, driving him even more insane. The whole sitcom portion of the episode had many people, including myself, laughing at the absurdity of it all. I don’t think I’ve ever laughed watching an episode of this show. In an interview with the NY Times, director and show creator Sam Esmail discussed how they stayed true to Mr. Robot while also doing justice to 90s sitcoms:

The one thing I didn’t want to do was my warped version of the sitcom, although there is some [expletive] that happens that wouldn’t typically happen in a sitcom. We had to keep a little of the “Mr. Robot” tone in there. But at the same time we wanted to be really authentic to what those sitcoms looked and felt like. We researched how they shot them. We brought on a guy who does the laugh tracks for sitcoms. We actually hired the people that created the music not just for Full House, but for Family Matters and the rest of the T.G.I.F. lineup, including the T.G.I.F. theme song, which we created our own version of with Word Up Wednesday. We really tried to follow the model as close as possible.

I was really hoping that we would get to stay in the sitcom portion of this episode a little longer but it was time for us and Elliot to jump back to reality. Mr. Robot protected him from feeling and experiencing the beating but as Ray said, there is a lot of work to be done still. When Elliot comes to we see exactly how f***** up he really is; they guy can barely breathe. After a creepy comparison to his dog, Ray has Lone Star and another Thug grab Elliot and remove him from the hospital. He is then brought to a basement of some sort and we get the most heart wrenching scene between Elliot and his Dad (Mr. Robot). Elliot thanks his Dad for taking care of him, essentially thanking himself for actually giving a crap, and they hug. Christian Slater (Mr. Robot) and Rami Malek’s (Elliot) portrayal of those two characters in that scene are the epitome of perfection. They play off each other so well.

We also get a flashback of a young Elliot and a still alive, but dying Mr. Robot. After Elliot gets beat up at school his Dad proceeds to tell him that he is sick and has lost his job. Tasking his son with the burden of keeping his sickness secret from his mother and sister, Mr. Robot brings young Elliot to his new store and asks him to name it. He tells Elliot to think of whatever comes to his mind first and that is what the computer store will be named. A real sweet father/son moment becomes just a little sweeter when Mr. Robot promises to never leave Elliot. This is why Mr. Robot is a figment of Elliot’s imagination.

Cisco helps out Darlene and FSociety once again but this time pays for it. He gets his finger stabbed with a syringe by a member of The Dark Army. Angela meets up with Darlene and sees Cisco for the first time since her ex-boyfriend Ollie got that infamous CD from him. She then goes undercover to hack the FBI in an attempt to erase any evidence against herself and Elliot. Darlene sets up shop in a nearby hotel and walks Angela through the script after the wifi jams. Not having blown her cover yet, Angela is greeted by Dom. Is the jig up?

Next Week

How does Angela get out safely and not blow her cover?

Elliot learns the truth about Tyrell, 5/9 and the 3 days he lost after the hack. What did Elliot do?

*IF YOU HAVE NOT SEEN LAST NIGHT’S EPISODE TURN BACK NOW. MAJOR SPOILERS LIE AHEAD!*

Under pressure from Elliot, who has decided to go forth with his plan and hack the FBI database in order to remove all incriminating evidence against himself, Angela, and the other 5/9 hackers, Darlene is forced to turn to Angela for help.

As Angela works in the same building as the FBI agents trying to track down Elliot and crew, Darlene asks her to drop a device on the 23rd floor in order for the hack to take place. This hack would allow access to all FBI android phones, databases and E-Corp databases. Unfortunately for Darlene, Angela refuses to make the drop and decides she will take her chances. That is until she runs into her ex, Ollie.

Angela meets up with him at a bar and realizes he is recording their conversation. This is moments after he hands her his resume in hopes of getting a job. It turns out he has spoken to the FBI more than once about the CD, although he claims he didn’t name her, but did help give a composite sketch, presumably of Elliot, to the FBI during their conversations. With her back up against the wall Angela is forced to save her own skin, and Elliot’s for that matter, and make the drop. After rekindling her friendship with Elliot, Angela heads to the safe house and meets up with Darlene to begin planning the drop.

On the FBI side of things, Dominique heads to China to meet with the minister of state security after uncovering evidence at Steel Valley. White Rose of the Dark Army is Minister Jung and holds the title of minister of state security unbeknownst to Dom. Minister Jung hosts a party at his estate and gets Dom to open up about why she joined the FBI. He also sort-of lets her in on his double life as White Rose by showing her some of his dresses. He claims they are his sister’s but Dom is aware of his family lineage.

After quoting Shakespeare, Jung leaves in a hurry, presumably due to Dark Army matters. The next day Dom and the other FBI agents are visiting one of the Chinese data farms and are ambushed by two masked men. Many of Dom’s fellow agents are slain. We have yet to see if she makes it out alive. Curiosity may kill this cat.

Back in New York, Joanna Wellick is back to her devious ways. After Kareem’s paranoia increases, she has him paralyzed then violently murdered by one of her guards, staging it to look like a robbery gone wrong. Kareem takes a shot to the chest and to the temple. Joanna wanted him to die with answers, “Otherwise we are nothing but ruthless murderers,” she said. That’s cold. She quickly warms up, however, when she receives another anonymous phone call. Is Tyrell still in New York? Who is calling her? Whoever it was, was literally right outside her apartment.

Elliot also deals with some violence at the hands of Ray and his henchmen in this episode. After some poking and prodding, Elliot learns Ray’s site sells a little bit of everything—drugs, young sex slaves who have obviously been victims of human trafficking, weapons, and hitmen for hire.

Unfortunately for Elliot, the other hacker he pried this information from was not as trustworthy as he thought. Flipping on him immediately, Elliot is grabbed by Lone Star and a few of Ray’s other thugs and is beaten.

The number one lesson to pull away from “Logic Bomb” is that curiosity almost always gets you injured and may also end up getting you killed in the hacker world.

Next week:

Angela makes the drop and has to pull off the hack whilst Elliot is out of commission

Will Dom make it out alive?

Will Elliot escape from Lone Star & Ray? Will he make the guilty pay and a save the innocent?
