New Video: Smoke DZA “City of Dreams”

This April Fool’s day marks the scheduled release date for Smoke DZA‘s newest compilation, Dream.ZONE.Achieve. Like its title, the album is structured in three acts, each with seven cuts apiece. Of the 21 songs confirmed on the album, one joint is a relic from the past–last spring’s “Ghosts of Dipset.” But this week, two new anthems have emerged on the web to get fans excited for Dream.Zone.Achieve‘s spring unveiling. Yesterday we dropped DZA‘s collaboration with Ab-Soul and DJ Dahi, “Hearses”. Today, we’re blessed with a fresh new video for “City of Dreams,” directed by none other than New York’s own Damon Dash. Check it out below.

New Music: Lee Bannon – “216”

On the Soundcloud of legendary label Ninja Tune, which recently signed Lee Bannon, “216” is labeled as jungle and as drum & bass, These are respectable labels and Ninja Tune is certainly authorized to make them, but the way “216” patiently sprawls out makes it feel like something that isn’t quite captured by those familiar labels. Or maybe this writer just doesn’t know a damn thing about jungle and drum & bass. Listen below and give us your thoughts.

New Mixtape: CJ Fly (Pro-Era) “Thee Way Eye See It”

CJ Fly is officially the newest break-out emcee from the Pro-Era crew. The 20 year old rapper just dropped his first solo mixtape, Thee Way Eye See It, last Friday, and it is obvious that he means business. The debut project not only features production from hot producers like Carnage, Statik Selektah, and Esta, but it also has an impressive list of guest artists–most notably, Phife Dawg from A Tribe Called Quest. How this 20 year old managed to get one of hip-hop’s greatest retired rappers to appear on his first mixtape is beyond us. However, after listening to track, its obvious why the two decided to collab. CJ Fly‘s first album is lyrically focused, while still maintaining a very smooth vibe, reminiscent of the old school New York swag pioneered by groups like ATCQ. We’re interested in seeing which songs from the new tape CJ is going to debut while he’s performing on the Smokers Club Tour this winter. So far, tracks like “The Heist”, “Too Paid”, and “Seek Well” have received the most praise from CJ‘s fan base.

With production credit behind the likes of Talib Kweli, The Alchemist, Joey Bada$$, Ab-Soul, Fat Trel, Smoke DZA, Strong Arm Steady, U-N-I, Consequence, Curren$y, the experimental hip-hop producer, originally from north California and now based in Brooklyn, NY, is stepping out with his latest offering, CALIGULA THEME MUSIC 2.7.5. New Mixtape: “The Help EP” Super Helpful

The influence of Madlib and MF DOOM is in full effect. You can hear their lo-fi, loop-heavy, and blunted sounds all over this new EP from Super Helpful, the drugged-out trio of producer Lee Bannon and rappers Chuck Strangers and Kwame. Their five-track release, The Help EP, is like the sonic equivalent of hot-boxing a room full of vinyl, which actually doesn’t sound so bad when you think about it. This project serves as a precursor of a full-length coming later this year that will hopefully retain the same grit and off-the-cuff approach.

We’re big fans of Smoke Dza over here at RESPECT. and we feel he is a little underrated on the New York totem pole, so you know what happens when a new joint drops: just shut up and turn up the Kushed God. Go over to Live Mixtapes and cop his new mixtape, K.O.N.Y. It’s his latest project since his collaborative venture with producer Harry Fraud. It enlists producers like DJ Dahi, Lee Bannon, Harry Fraud, Ski Beats, and feature verses from A$AP Twelvy, Big K.R.I.T, Curren$y, King Chip, Ab-Soul, Fat Trel, Joey Bada$$ and more. New Music: Main Attraktionz- “Cloudy Body”

In preporation for Bossalinis & Fooliyones, Main Attraktionz has dropped two new cuts from the forthcoming album. Last month they released “Do it for the Bay“, and this week they’re back again with “Cloudy Body“. Seeing as Squadda Bambino and Mondre Man have really taken the “cloud rap” meme to a new level, the title of their new track seems fitting. Plus, the single serves as a precursor to the group’s upcoming CMJ appearances, where they’ll be playing the Young One and Mishka parties on October 17th and 18th, respectively.
