Following last year’s innovative Perverse Ramblings LP, Kyle Rapps returns with searing stream-of-conscious raps about the issues plaguing our nation on his self-produced new single, “Dark Hour.”

The track borrows its hook and overarching message from Martin Luther King Jr.’s 1967 speech at the National Conference for New Politics. Among other points, he makes it clear that the U.S. is distinctly divided in two; a statement that still rings true more than 50 years later. Rapps is obviously aware of this, choosing not just to include the speech sample in the chorus, but to also drive home MLK’s points in his own words.

However, “Dark Hour” isn’t only an indictment of our times, though it does feature a particularly potent lyrical shot at 45. Rapps also uses his hypnotizing production to bring to light another struggle—the desire for sex and perhaps not knowing the best time to ask for it. Without giving away too much of the borderline-hysterical second verse, the Mexico-based artist’s bars about getting flipped off by a female are particularly rewind-worthy.

Perverse Ramblings is the work of a Hip-Hop eccentric with no contemporaries. While your favorite emcee may drop a handful of sex fueled rhymes here or there, they’ve got nothing on Kyle Rapps. The Mexico-dwelling artist has outfitted his latest project with layers of not just over-the-top sexuality, but bits and pieces of humanity. And it’s those snippets of reality that truly ground Perverse Ramblings, all while making it Rapps’ best work yet.

If you’ve been following the rapper-producer’s singles this past year, chances are you’ve been anticipating the album’s release with fervor. Each single, from “Fiction” to “Eulogy,” displayed hints of what to expect from the full project both lyrically and sonically. This is actually Rapps’ first time producing his own entire effort, and he’s got some serious chops. Not only is his production style perfectly tailored for his eccentric vocals, but he brings a cohesive vision fueled by noisy synthetics and hard-hitting percussion.

Also, on those aforementioned tracks, Rapps displayed his ability to blend sexed-up bravado with real-life pain, something he really brings to light on “Touch.” Take these lines, for instance: “My mother died of cancer but I’m not looking for no pity/ I’m just movin’ through the city lookin’ for somethin’ real pretty/ When it comes to bein’ a boyfriend, I’m real shitty/ ‘cuz I cheat and act real pissy.”

It’s not all doom and gloom for Rapps, however, because he’s equally as deft at providing levity. That goes for when he turns classic rock songs upside down on “Hallelujah,” “Dust,” and “Horse,” in addition to this fantastic bit from the single “Fiction”: “Woke up to my neighbors playing 36 Chambers/ Then my ex bust through the door like Kramer/ Danger.”

As you may have noticed, Perverse Ramblings no doubt stays true to part of its name (the perversion), but these are not mere ramblings. Rapps is telling a clearly outlined story here, and it’s one of love, pain, heartbreak, and more sex than you could possibly imagine. If that’s not something you can relate to on some level, maybe you just need to marinate on this one.

In addition to continuing to flex his chops as a producer, Mexico City-based artist Kyle Rapps is showcasing his ability to blend filthy raps and lyrics addressing social issues on “Eulogy.” It’s the latest single off his upcoming and appropriately titled new album, Perverse Ramblings.

Whereas preceding single “Fiction” was steeped in tales of lust with multiple women, “Eulogy” also features the New Jersey native blurring the lines between topics. Backed by his own electronic-leaning production, Rapps goes all the way in on a relationship that was filled with some of the most graphic sexual moments you can imagine. Seriously, if you can think of something even remotely nasty, it’s probably on here—even the fact that he “used to f*ck her in the water like a hippopotamus.”

The only thing is, there’s also a societal weight that runs throughout the sexuality. And that’s exactly why he sing-songs the following on the all-too-catchy chorus: “This is ain’t a love song, it’s a eulogy/ For all good shi*t we had between you and me/ For all the black kings that had to die stupidly, it’s a eulogy.” You see, Rapps may be a self-proclaimed “dirtbag with a heart of gold,” but there’s another layer here. The overtly sexual nature of the track is more about the way that we screw each other—and how our greater society happens to f*ck certain people more than others.
