Recently Charlotte’s DJ Pauly Guwop premiered Kirk Collins’ mixtape entitled, Modern and I can honestly say that it’s worth the listen. Now of course I’m all for Carolina artists, but when it comes down to it, it’s usually the mixtape that keeps the buzz going. Now usually when you hear a mixtape especially from an underground artist, there’s a high chance that every song will have the same focus or have the same vibe/rhythm. This time, it’s not like this. There’s not one song on the mixtape that sounds alike and that in itself is f**king refreshing.

The first song off the mixtape “Runway Models” featuring Austin Royale sets the tone almost perfectly. And you would think based off the first single you can see how the rest of the mixtape is gonna flow right? Uh no. Many of these singles were dope but the ones that really stood out and eventually placed on repeat were songs like “D.O.A (Death of Aaliyah),” “Glass Water” which was produced by Tyler, the Creator (yeah you read right), “I Love Sade (prod. by D.Sanders and TDE’s Isaiah Rashad),” and  “Men Lie Women Lie.” Last but not least “Tarantino” as well as “Max B”  simply HIT. Okay so there’s nine tracks on the mixtape and yeah I pretty much just told you that the whole mixtape contains nothing but fire quality songs but I’m only distributing the truth here.

Most mixtapes we give a chance to make us feel some type of way within 1 to 2 days but in this case, I don’t think it’ll take long for you to warm up to this mixtape or artist himself. Given that this mixtape has great production, fluid features, and dope concepts, it’s definitely going to be exciting to see what this artist will creatively distribute next. Since the year has started, Charlotte’s Brio has been on a consistent wave. From dropping unique singles like “Might”, “Sapphire”, and “Paint” but of course that’s just the beginning of the list. When this Charlotte native isn’t making singles for himself, you can catch him producing for artists like Kirk Collins, Two-9, and BlackFloyd.

Although he’s been on the move, he definitely hasn’t got off track from making his own magic. Recently the rapper/producer dropped his single titled “48 hrs” and as usual, it’s a GO. Being that he’s been showcasing a list of singles thus far, you can expect to see the single off the EP he will be dropping soon titled Lite Bleu. Although this isn’t his first EP that he has helped put together, this will be his first independent project. Just like any first project from an artist, it will be the test of versatility and really showcase how interested people are in what he’s doing for not only his city but for the youth. Being that his rap sheet already speaks for itself (and that’s without the release of the EP), it should be interesting to see what exactly will be on the EP, if he will have anyone featuring, and most importantly who will be on production.

There’s usually a date for EP’s and albums but having dates is almost close to pointless and require hella anticipation. In this case, we’ll have to wait until something is hinted either subliminally through the gram or announced via Twitter. Until then all we can do is place our trust in the word “soon” and hope that we will be given some type of flame. Whatever the Charlotte native decides to do, just know that it’ll be here within good timing.

The whole concert was split in half bringing out artists from Kirk Collins and Austin Royale to Key! (former member of Two-9) and Denzel Curry’s fellow labelmate, JK The Reaper. Media outlets like Smoker’s Club, The Fader, and many others were present to take notice of the range of talent that came out to perform.

Out of all the performances, the artist who really stood out was Charlotte’s very own Rashaun Hampton. As soon as he popped on stage during the day show with his song “Jesus Piece,” he literally only had to rap 2 bars [PAUSE] –a rare thing to happen in a local Charlotte-based event. The entire crowd truly embraced what Hampton had to offer.

Rashaun Hampton was considerably the breakout act at the concert and will definitely keep holding Charlotte’s attention as a rising artist out of the 704.
