Kendrick may be hard at work on his sophomore effort, but his debut isn’t going away any time soon. On August 9, Lamar, along with director Kahlil Joseph, will unveil m.A.A.d, a 14-minute short film based on the Compton MC’s platinum debut. The screening will take place at Sundance’s NEXT Festival at the Ace Hotel Downtown in Los Angeles. The film is described as “a kaleidoscope of storylines and ideas that defy typical categorization to explore new languages and new forms.” Both Kendrick and Kahlil will be attending the event and participating in a discussion panel following the screening. The face of album promotion is changing. Posters, flyers, singles and magazine ads just aren’t enough anymore. Nowadays trailers and short films are quietly becoming more widely used. Sometimes these short films are fleeting, like some of the goofy vids for the release of The OF Tape Vol. 2, but other times they make a real impression. Flying Lotus’ short film, “Until the Quiet Comes,” taken from the name of his upcoming album, definitely falls into the latter category.
