As you know, RESPECT. highlights the most deserving, talents artists out; today, we’d like to introduce Houston native Jevon Doe, who recently broke out with his hit single “Name” (with a visual for the track on the way). Peep the exclusive interview with Jevon Doe below, where he talks about who he would collaborate with, how he got signed with Atlantic Records, and what’s next from the young artist.

RESPECT.: There is a sequence of sorts from the first EP release to your recent project, My Life Changed, Pt. 1…will the third EP continue the same concept?

No, because people got to know me as a person with real life situations from the [first] two projects. My story is about where I’m coming from. The third EP will be something fresh and new that no one has never heard of.

RESPECT.: Name your top artists you want to collaborate with in the future.

I would say Childish Gambino, because he [brings] me back to the Lauryn Hill vibe. Lil’ Wayne is one of my favorite rappers and I like how he works and operates in the studio. Also I would say [in addition to Ms. Hill] Andre 3000, because they’re very vulnerable on their tracks. I love their craft and how people can understand and relate [to them, and how] they can open up to the world and be themselves.

RESPECT.: What made you get into the music industry?

When I was playing sports, it died off. I had to get into something that fits my personality in where I like to have fun and entertain people. I remember meeting with Shawn Barron at 19; and he saw I had potential as an artist. I stayed in contact and constantly sent him music; and [he continued to tell] me that I got something going for my career. He believed that I could get signed, and he signed me at 24.

RESPECT.: Can you describe how “life” is symbolized in your first EP releases?

Story of My Life is a dream about me coming out to Los Angeles and being able to make it. My other EP, My Life Changed Pt. 1, is about being in the city on good and bad terms, seeing who is real and being honest with me on how I dealt with my emotions.

RESPECT.: Your latest single, “Name,” is a dope recreation of Musiq Soulchild’s “Just Friends.” Did you think it would blow up? What was the vision behind the song?

When I first heard it, I knew it would be a dope single. The vision behind it is, ‘At first the girl may not talk to you, but six months from now, she is wanting to talk to you’. I want the single to be fun and something people can relate to.

RESPECT.: Who do you look up to as your inspiration?

Drake, J. Cole and Kendrick Lamar [are a few]. It motivates me to get to that point in my career as an artist. Another one is Travi$ Scott because he makes me keep going and striving as an artist.

RESPECT.: What is your favorite song off of My Life Changed, Pt. 1? Why?

I would say “Love and Hate” because of certain situations making me realize people and who they are.

RESPECT.: What’s next for Jevon Doe?

I will be dropping music at the top of the year. My single “Love and Hate” visual will be coming soon.
