The Brainfeeder rapper-producer feels very much to be channeling his inner Blu, maybe on his Jesusalbum. “The Heat” sure has a slow burn, but burn it does: the beat is a beautiful, jazzy waltz of sampling and Jeremiah compliments it well with some slow, stoned bars that let occasionally poignant snippets of his life poke through. It’s stunning what some of the shortest possible phrases can do: “Stove on, mom gone, tryna keep the lights on,” he raps, revealing the title’s true meaning. He doesn’t spit it with much difference in his voice; it’s all just a part of the all-Jeremiah Jae collage.

Teaming up with his fellow Black Jungle Squad compatriot Oliver the 2nd, Jae skips rope over the beat, maintaining a distinct rhythm yet never landing exactly in the same place. Oliver the 2nd takes a similar approach, oscillating between a steady flow and one punctuated with pauses.

The instrumental is sparse, yet intimidating. Blending hollowed bass, brief synths and very precise stops, it’s a death trap, especially for rappers without proper breath control. But somehow these two handle it with finesse. The effortlessness with which they approach this track is telling: they know what the hell they’re doing. Respect the expertise and watch below.

Rapper and producer Jeremiah Jae recently dropped his cohesive, story-like project “Bad Jokes”, which employs dark humor and irony as a means for exposing flaws in mass media. Here, “bad” reads as both foolish and wicked, and the motif of a mindless and somewhat scheming entertainment industry runs throughout the mixtape.

JJ chops comedy sketches to make them sound grim, includes the self-important voices of news reporters on “King Raid”, and uses a bizarre sample of a German vocal on “Guns N Butter” for a disorienting experience which is laughable, slightly frightening, and always original. “We not tellin’ jokes, just reveal the hoax,” Jae raps on “King Raid”; the hoax represents everyone from mainstream comedians and phony fortune tellers, like the one on “Soul Yoga”, to commercial rappers who are “new in the game” and “in it for the coupe and the chains”. The essence of “Bad Jokes” eludes clear definition, but the idea that pervades is that people have ulterior motives for action, like the girls in “Pervert”, who only watch sports “to see buff men in shorts”. “Bad Jokes” features production by Flying Lotus, Jonwayne, and Oliver the 2nd, and is a winding adventure that is consistently intelligent and funny, despite the title.

Jeremiah Jae has started a slow but steady release of what he promises to be a new free album, Black Jungle Radio. This week the Brainfeeder emcee has been releasing one new track everyday via his SoundCloud, starting with “Black Myth” on Thursday and introducing “Thrashers” today. The song has an ill loop that, judging by the preliminary horns, piano, and funky bass line, is sampling a funky 70’s cut from some funky 70’s movie. But of course, Mr. Jae mixes it up, adding a variety of eclectic samples, ranging from some latino vocals, and a stand-up comedy act, to a super slick guitar solo and a screaming band of chipmunks/little girls.

The track Jeremiah dropped yesterday was just as fantastic. “Fonz”, as its called, pays homage to the Happy Days character Arthur Herbert Fonzarelli, while the Chicago-based rapper drops his verses over a super eerie self-produced instrumental. “From the menacing vocals to the horror movie-esque synth line, this cut will definitely leave you throwing your thumbs up and proclaiming ‘Ayyyy!’ like Fonzie!”

And of course, the debut track off of Black Jungle Radio kicked off the free compilation to a great start. “Black Myth” features the one and only Zeroh. Billed to Jae & Zeroh, the two solo artists do make for a natural duoas they traded verses of a very minimal, dubby soul loop from fellow West Coast Producer Kutmah– who is currently exiled in the UK while rolling with Tempo Clash Crew.

Check back for tomorrows the fourth installment of the album, which is sure to be another great track.
