XXL Freshman alum Jarren Benton joins forces with Roc Nation for the release of his new single “Don’t Need You,” which sees him reuniting with former Funk Volume labelmate Hopsin. The track also acts as a prelude to Benton’s forthcoming project, Yuck Fou, which drops July 27th. Benton spoke on the new drop (via press release):

“I’m really excited about this track. It’s been three years since me and Hopsin have collaborated… Ironically it’s also been three years since me and [producer] Kato have done a project together. This one is special…it’s easy to hear the chemistry is still there. The song concept came from a humorous conversation that me and Hopsin had regarding how people treat you when they think that you’re no longer relevant in the music industry. In those times you begin to see who your real friends are and the ones who aren’t…f*** ‘em…”

In addition to the new music, Benton is also hitting the road for his Yuck Fou tour; you can check out the single and tour dates below.

If you’ve been following Funk Volumes’s Jarren Benton then you’re familiar with the off-hand, wild approach to his musical content and overall demeanor. That being said, “Diamonds & Fur,” from his “Slow Motion” EP, is a vivid look into the serious artistic nature that Jarren possesses. Slow-panning, wide angle shots, trippy slo-mo, and his signature fox tail hat – what more could you ask for?

It is that time of the year again, folks, where XXL reveals their Freshman cover. This year’s “Dirty Dozen” are Chance the Rapper, Rich Homie Quan, Isaiah Rashad, Ty Dolla $ign, Lil Durk, Kevin Gates, Troy Ave, Vic Mensa, Lil Bibby, Jon Connor, Jarren Benton, and August Alsina. There is always a ton of scrutiny on who makes the cut, and by the look of it this year will be no different. The actual definition of “freshman” is always a hot debate because many of these artists have already had multiple mixtapes, and August Alsina just dropped his debut album.  Many may have something to say about August and Ty Dolla $ign making the cut since they are more in the R&B category and the list is usually limited to rappers.
