XXL Freshman alum Jarren Benton joins forces with Roc Nation for the release of his new single “Don’t Need You,” which sees him reuniting with former Funk Volume labelmate Hopsin. The track also acts as a prelude to Benton’s forthcoming project, Yuck Fou, which drops July 27th. Benton spoke on the new drop (via press release):

“I’m really excited about this track. It’s been three years since me and Hopsin have collaborated… Ironically it’s also been three years since me and [producer] Kato have done a project together. This one is special…it’s easy to hear the chemistry is still there. The song concept came from a humorous conversation that me and Hopsin had regarding how people treat you when they think that you’re no longer relevant in the music industry. In those times you begin to see who your real friends are and the ones who aren’t…f*** ‘em…”

In addition to the new music, Benton is also hitting the road for his Yuck Fou tour; you can check out the single and tour dates below.

Jarren Benton is back with a new project and is equipped with a new visual for “Slow Motion Intro“—the lead single from his new upcoming mixtape Slow Motion Vol. 2. Backed by cuts courtesy of former label mate DJ Hoppa, Benton’s new Jakob Owens-directed visual showcases his signature rapid-fire flow while effortlessly stirring in a cascade of scintillating bars full of adeptness and substance over solid production.

Jarren’s impending mixtape, Slow Motion Vol. 2, will serve as the first independent release since the expiration of his former record label, Funk Volume. Benton notes that the new project will be one of his most personal projects to date, showcasing his growth as an artist and emcee as he touches on personal topics including the death of his friend/manager, and the project’s namesake, Slow Motion. The project will come with contributions from the likes of Kato on the Track, M16, Justin Padron, RocNMayne, J.U.S.T.I.C.E League, and Statik Selektah, as well as several others. Slow Motion Vol. 2 is scheduled to arrive July 15th.

Peep the visual above and feel free to drop us your thoughts.

When you talk about the best cyphers coming out of Hip Hop nowadays, there’s no way you can’t mention the work TeamBackPack has been putting in for years. Their last MULA event held in Los Angeles, California this May brought out thousands of people itching to be a part of the raw lyricism TBP is known for delivering. One of the heavyweight cyphers the company put together features none other than Cyhi The Prynce (G.O.O.D. Music), Joell Ortiz (Slaughterhouse), and Jarren Benton (Funk Volume). All three MC’s are known for their grit and wordplay and all three show-and-proved on that mic. Produced by Krox, check out the cypher down below and stay tuned to more TBP drops coming all month here. Who do you think got the best verse?

That being said, “Diamonds & Fur,” from his “Slow Motion” EP, is a vivid look into the serious artistic nature that Jarren possesses. Slow-panning, wide angle shots, trippy slo-mo, and his signature fox tail hat – what more could you ask for?

It is that time of the year again, folks, where XXL reveals their Freshman cover. This year’s “Dirty Dozen” are Chance the Rapper, Rich Homie Quan, Isaiah Rashad, Ty Dolla $ign, Lil Durk, Kevin Gates, Troy Ave, Vic Mensa, Lil Bibby, Jon Connor, Jarren Benton, and August Alsina. There is always a ton of scrutiny on who makes the cut, and by the look of it this year will be no different. The actual definition of “freshman” is always a hot debate because many of these artists have already had multiple mixtapes, and August Alsina just dropped his debut album. Many may have something to say about August and Ty Dolla $ign making the cut since they are more in the R&B category and the list is usually limited to rappers. What do you think about the list? Do you think these 12 men were deserving of gracing the cover? Not one female on the cover? Who do you think should have made it? Hit us in the comments to let us know your thoughts.
