RESPECT. Interview: Veteran Producer James Worthy Discusses Talking Gems With the Greats, Passion, and Releasing His Latest Project ‘Kaleidoscopes’

Top 10 Billboard Charting Recording Artist, 3X Grammy Nominated Producer/Songwriter, & Actor James Worthy is quite an influential musician in the music industry. Hailing from Queens New York, his love of music began at a very early age.

By age 10, he was granted the opportunity to meet Michael Jackson backstage at Webster Hall in NewYork, City. One of his fondest memories of that experience was Mr Jackson speaking with him backstage & telling him that he would one day be influential in the entertainment industry.

This inspired him to pursue his passion for music. As James continued to flourish in the business he has done Television, Film, Production, Songwriting, & Entrepreneurship.

James has worked with various artists including: B Angie B, Justin Bieber, Arrested Development, PM Dawn, Silk, Sara Stokes, Robin S, Truth Hurts, Bobby Brown, Petey Pablo, Yung Berg, Bonecrusher, Fetty Wap, T-Pain, Future, Michael Keith of 112, Lil Zane, Diamond of Crime Mobb, Kia Shine, Sonna Rele, Dae Dae, J’honni Blaze, Asian Doll, Kalenna Harper, Kevin Rudolf, 6lack, Blac Youngsta, DJ Luke Nasty, Natasha Mosley, and so many others.

Following up to 2017 his newest endeavor was joining a group duo entitled “Kings X2”. Their debut single “Wine For Me” hit #10 On the Billboard Hot Singles Sales Chart. After the groups departure His most recent project has been “Blu Leisure” which is his debut album including the hit single “Blu Sunsets”. Also charted #146 on DRT Global Top Radio Charts. Most recently he has released his debut EP “Blu Leisure” which is now available everywhere.

Coming into 2020 he has released his sophomore EP entitled “Kaleidoscopes” which is co executive produced by PM Dawn.

RESPECT.: Do you remember your first music placement?

James Worthy: It was so long ago but it was a record for Yung Berg at the time.

RESPECT.: How many hours did it take for you to find passion in your craft?

James Worthy: I’ve had passion for music since I was 11 years old. It never left me, but to perfect my craft and grow with it took many years to manifest.

RESPECT.: What does the music business mean to you vs the music industry?

James Worthy: Well the key word is “Business”. In any form of corporate america business is what carries the financial obligations of life good or bad. With the music industry, its a world where people can have freedom to express themselves through musical format, but it can also be used for selfish gains as well.

RESPECT.: How did you get your name in the game?

James Worthy: I began as a upcoming songwriter, which then turned into production. By networking, and using the early social media tools I found myself working with more mainstreams artists just by being in the mix and in the conversations of who to work with. What really set me apart from others was that I worked with older and newer artists within all genre’s.

RESPECT.: What is your most memorable collaboration?

James Worthy: Thats always a hard question because from all the artists I’ve worked with, they’ve had their own ways of working with me and what we created was always magical. There was always the mindset of originality instead of remaking music.

RESPECT.: What do you aspire to accomplish to reach your next peak?

James Worthy: Right now the focus is my artistry. Continuing to touch my fans around the world, and reaching them through my stories in my music. Expect more bodies of work, Touring, Television, and Film projects.

RESPECT.: Does the game change or just the names?

James Worthy: The game never changed, just the people in it. Business has a way of shifting technology for the consumers.

RESPECT.: What separates the rookies from the Veterans?

James Worthy: In order to become a veteran you have to go through experiences within trial & error. Learning business in the sense of what not to do is what makes you seasoned.

RESPECT.: Tell us about your follow up EP ‘Kaleidoscopes’ following from your debut ‘Blu Leisure’. What was your vision for this project?

James Worthy: Kaleidoscopes is my 2nd Sophomore EP. the vision was to give my fans a more advanced look into my life and stories I’ve gone through within my life. It is also a continuation of my first EP “Blu Leisure” released in 2019.

RESPECT.: What does it take to become a superstar?

James Worthy: Passion, Drive, Determination, Resources, & Teamwork.

RESPECT.: Who would you like to work with in 2020?

James Worthy: There are many on my list from: The Weeknd, Kanye West, Frank Ocean, MIA, Sia, Chris Brown, and many more.

RESPECT.: What does RESPECT. mean to you?

James Worthy: It means understanding what you stand for.

Grammy nominated R&B singer/songwriter and producer James Worthy has been putting in a lot of work lately. Coming off his recent performance at Sweet Auburn Music Fest, he is at an all time high in his career.

Recently I caught up with the soul singer in a quick interview to discuss his career, working with Ecstacy of Whodini and what he is currently working on.

RESPECT.: At what point of your life did you realize that you wanted to pursue a career in music seriously?

James: It all started in New York where growing up I listened to all types of music. The interesting part about it is that, I was introduced to Michael Jackson, A Tribe Called Quest & Whodini who inspired me to make my own music and learn about other musicians and songwriters.

Their ability to infuse other genre’s into hip hop was interesting to me and sparked my passion for music ever since.

RESPECT.: How difficult has it been crossing over from producing and writing to becoming a solo artist?

James: It actually hasn’t been that difficult as I thought it would be. Reason being that most of my fans love me for me & my music. I think along the years people were waiting for me to release something on my own, but I had to do it when I was ready.

Now that those people are hearing it along with new fans, it’s been an amazing journey thus far.

RESPECT.: What was is like working with Ecstacy of Whodini for the “Move” record? Why do you feel like it has been so successful?

James: It was definitely unexpected but a blessing as well. I look to Ecstacy as my musical mentor so having him on my record & being apart of the Whodini legacy is an honor for me.

I think people weren’t expecting it either so when it did release it was like an eye opener. I’m blessed to see the reaction & love we are received from it thus far.

RESPECT.: What does it feel like to be a Grammy Nominated songwriter and producer?

James: Feels great! but it also feels like I have much more work to do.

RESPECT.: When can we expect a project from you?

James: Yes my debut EP “Blu Leisure” will be releasing in January 2019! Stay tuned for that.

RESPECT.: What’s up next for James Worthy?

James: Expect the new EP, new visuals, new music produced & written from me, & most importantly just continued quality work from what I love to do.
