Red… Blue… Green… 3 main stages were set for another incredible time at Boston Calling Music Festival. Attendees from all over the country gathered to be apart. The popular event features some of the biggest names in music, comedy, visual arts, concessions, shopping and more. Now in it’s second year being held at Harvard University’s Athletic Complex, the population has comfortably risen and more stages have been placed. At last, the 2018 installment of festival had arrived. The lively city of Boston, Massachusetts was full of energy as the 3-day celebration kicked off.

Festivals of the highest caliber offer more than just an incredible lineup of music. Games like hacky sack and cornhole were a great way for people to interact with each other and entertain themselves. Popular distributor for CD’s, apparel and figurines, Newbury Comics, held a “spin the wheel” contest where virtually everyone was a winner. Prizes included gift cards, water bottles, beach balls and much more to choose from. Audio company, JBL, also got in on the contest fun. People lined up and took turns throwing a ball at different targets lined up on a wall. You could win headphones, blue tooth speakers or other cool prizes. An exciting new installation created by innovative furniture company, IKEA, was probably the most popular attraction of the festival. Canopies, a rocking club area and samples of “IKEA Food” were given out. It was definitely the place to visit if you wanted to relax until the next artist took the stage.

This year, Boston Calling didn’t hold back. An impressive list of top artists fit the bill. This year’s lineup included Tyler, The Creator, Jack White, The Killers, Khalid, BROCKHAMPTON, Paramore, the legendary, Eminem, and more. Stunning performances played throughout the weekend. A diverse mix of music genres offered a chance to open ears to new artists and sounds you may not have been accustomed to before. Boston native, Cousin Stizz, was easily a highlight of the festival. Stizz was added to replace Stormzy, who couldn’t make the festival due to illness. The crowd participation was unmatched. Another notable performance was BROCKHAMPTON. The modern day boyband played their last performance until they handle some personal issues amongst their group. Fans stood in the crowd for hours just to see them and Tyler, The Creator, who would follow. The only DJ set of the weekend was owned by Mike D, who was a replacement for Bryson Tiller. He would be the final person to hit the stage before Slim Shady.

Multi-platinum selling rapper, Eminem, closed out the festival with an amazing, nearly 2-hour long performance. Marshall was joined by D12 member and super producer, Mr. Porter under a unique Detroit-based stage set up and live band. The surprises didn’t stop as Shady brought out the talented, Skylar Grey, who covered the choruses on songs like “Walk On Water,” which originally features Beyoncé, and “Love The Way You Lie,” which originally features Rihanna. Royce Da 5’9” was another special guest to perform along side Eminem. The entire population of the festival crowded around the stage to watch one of the greatest artists to ever pick up a microphone. Fireworks erupted as fans said goodbye to another successful Boston Calling.

With Boston Calling 2018 in the books, we can come to the conclusion that it was one of the summers best parties to attend. Flashing lights, great food, the Ferris Wheel spinning and great people made for an action packed weekend. We can’t wait to see what next year’s festival will unfold.

Beyonce served us a freshly-squeezed treat over the weekend filled with dope visuals, a wide-range of musicality and a bit of tea with the premiere of her second surprise visual album, LEMONADE. The Queen’s sixth album is predicted to pour in good numbers…as expected.

As a member of the BeyHive, I must say the entire concept of the project is phenomenal, the execution of the presentation was superb and I’m emotionally connected to majority (if not all) of the tracks on the album and it was an overall win and it looks as though I’m not the only one who thought so.

According to HDD, first day sales projects a whopping 200k sales and predicts by the end of the week, LEMONADE will have racked in 500k-600k units possibly going Gold the first week, although there is also possibility she will exceed those numbers.

After the visual presentation aired on HBO Saturday night (which had the internet going crazy), it became exclusively available for streaming on TIDAL. The next day, purchase of the album became available on iTunes as well as Amazon. “Formation” is sitting on the #1 spot on the singles chart, while “Sorry” is #3, “Hold Up” is #4, “6 Inch” featuring The Weeknd is #5 and the Jack White-assisted “Don’t Hurt Yourself” is #9. Most of the recent of LEMONADE nabs the remainder of the Top 25.

LEMONADE also features Kendrick Lamar, James Blake, writing credit from Soulja Boy and The Dream as well as production-assistance from Diplo.

If you’ve just recently subscribed to Tidal, you might want to check your answering machine. Why? Well, there might be a familiar voice you didn’t expect to hear after the beep. Jay Z, along with a number of other music giants, recently acquired the digital music streaming service and Mr. Carter wants to personally thank you.

While not everyone should be holding their breath, a few lucky subscribers have actually received a phone call from Jay Z, and according to Business Insider, other “high profile” musicians like Jack White have been taking time to thank their users by phone call.

A cynical person might dub this a desperate attempt to get the streaming service off the ground, it’s sounding a little more like the single best customer service on the planet. Rumors that Kanye West‘s So Help Me God might drop exclusively on Tidal are already enough temptation to subscribe, yet a chance for a one-on-one with Hova himself is almost to0 good to pass up, just as long as he’s paying for the data.

In 1782, a young musician by the name of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart wrote a canon in B-flat major called “Leck mich im Arsch,” which translates to “Lick me in the ass.” “Thought to be a party piece for his friends,” the song went relatively unpraised until recently, when a certain Jack White dug it out of obscurity, sampling it for a record with… the Insane Clown Posse. The result is a modern day twist on Mozart’s facetious indulgence, a postmodern mush of high and low, and it sounds, actually, kinda hot. Violent J explains how the track came together in today’s Detroit News:

When they were finished recording, White played them some of the material he’d been working on, including songs with Tom Jones and Detroit rapper Black Milk. J returned the favor by playing White some of “The Mighty Death Pop,” “but he just did not seem interested,” J says. “He was real nice about it, super cool, but it was kind of like look-at-your-watch, let’s go.”

Read the whole piece. I’m not sure if ICP entirely understands the one-sided nature of irony.
