On Innanetape, we saw Vic play around with some dancier material, specifically that track with Thundercat, and he’s since toured with Disclosure, so it should come as no surprise that the high-energy, high-talent, medium-weirdness SaveMoney MC’s new track, “Down On My Luck” pushes the sonic boundaries of what you would normally find on RESPECT. New Music: Vic Mensa – “Feel That”

Vic Mensa, who has been releasing a track here and there ever since his INNANETAPE turned out to be one of the better mixtapes of 2013, is one of the more promising young talents making waves in the hip-hop game right now. Today, the Chicago-native dropped his latest, “Feel That,” a surprisingly club-friendly track produced by Smoko Ono. The beat is thumping and the hook is catchy enough to warrant repeated listens, so look for big things from Vic and the Chicago scene as a whole in 2014. Give “Feel That” a listen below.

New Music : Vic Mensa – “Crazy”

Chicago’s own Vic Mensa was in the holiday spirit, so he decided to give away “Crazy,” a previously unreleased track from 2010. In exchange for the track, fans could purchase his FreeWiFi package that included a Mensa T-shirt, a “Free-WiFi” hat, a URL grinder, and an autographed INNANETAPE sticker. The package has since sold out, but the track still goes. He was only 17 while making this one., which is crazy in and of itself. Listen to “Crazy” below.

New Music: Vic Mensa feat. Chance the Rapper – “Suitcase” (prod. IamCam)

Vic Mensa and Chance the Rapper were trippin’ long before Acid Rap, but this year definitely had a few more trips than usual. Rapping over an instrumental that would serve as elevator music if elevators transported us to other dimensions, the Chi-Town all-stars warp their words and their voices, transporting us to a limbo in which they simultaneously confront their pasts and their futures, not entirely of where they are, where they’re going or where they’ve been. All they have is their suitcases and what they’ve managed to keep from falling out in transit. If the Roman god Janus had an iPod, this would be his most played song. Listen below.

Video: Vic Mensa, Bun B, A$AP Rocky & Glam.I.Rock Freestyle on Rap Fix

Vic Mensa, Bun B and A$AP Rocky recently stopped by Rap Fix for various reasons. When it came time to freestyle, Vic went first and he went off. In fact, he went so hard that Sway had to cut to him off early and cut to commercial. Rocky and Bun B follow up with some verses of their own, which were respectably impromptu, but Vic was definitely still the star of the show. There’s also a random verse from a woman in a FUBU shirt (whoa there) who turns out to be Glam.I.Rock, from Oakland. She gets a solid second place, but Vic returns at the end to cement his dominance. New Video: Vic Mensa – “YNSP”

We don’t get to write about everything that happens in rap, but we do listen to a lot, so believe us when we say that Vic Mensa’s INNANETAPE is one of the most refreshing mixtapes of the year. Unsurprisingly, Vic shares our thoughts, so he had to let the corresponding visuals follow suit. The video for “YNSP” is a hark back to the days of the internet’s adolescence, when all images were distorted and “I have Netscape” wasn’t a self-deprecating joke. The video is definitely nostalgic, but it’s unique in that it doesn’t present the past as an unblemished fantasy-world. For Vic, the errors, inconsistencies and limitations don’t need to be downplayed or fetishized to enjoy the past. He and his crew revel in the weirdness, but they’re not “slumming it” or being ironic; they’re simply saying it was what it was. Watch below. He’s onto something.

Video: Vic Mensa Freestyles On Sway In The Morning

Vic Mensa dropped by Sway In The Morning recently to do a little #INNANETAPE promo. Probably in honor of his recent tour stint with J. Cole, Sway threw Vic the beat for one of Cole’s original noise-makers, back before Sideline Story dropped, “Who Dat.” Young Net absolutely nails the verse, throwing out a typically schizo-tempo’d verse that starts out with a beginning we’ve heard a million times before–our hero goes to the shelf, and grabs his gun. Vic then cuts this narrative short though, by having himself trip over an extension cord and bust his head open. The rest of the verse is full of memorable moments too, among them is “Cooking crack sentences, my shit to old to gentri-fix.” After his rapid-pace written is over, Vic lets of a disjointed freestyle and then without warning calls it quits.
