To set it off, “Like a Dream” eases you in with its laid-back, bluesy production from longtime collaborator, Havoc. It sets the tone for the Mobb’s Big Twins, Ty Nitty, and Godfather Pt. III to spit their raw, realist bars about life as they know it in Queensbridge. “Like a Dream” is also the first single off their upcoming new album, IM3, that will include production from The Alchemist, DJ Muggs, Twiz The Beat Pro, DirtyDiggs, and more.

But before we hear IM3, the three-piece also has a new EP in the works. That’s where you’ll find the menacing “Queens Get The Money,” a hard-hitting banger that could be the soundtrack to a bank heist. It also sounds like a new anthem for the Infamous Mobb, who waste no time firing off warning shots to their enemies in their verses. The track is produced by Quiet Genius, but the rest of the EP (currently untitled) is predominantly produced by Twiz The Beat Pro.

Today makes one year since the passing of the legendary Prodigy of Mobb Deep.  Although he isn’t with us, in physical form, his legacy lives on, and hip-hop continues to keep the classics in rotation.  P is well known and beloved for his voice, bona-fide street tales, sharing his personal life through music, and overall, being one of the illest emcees to ever pick up the mic.

His untimely death, at the young age of 42, still hurts the hip-hop community, and we hope his family, friends, and fans all across the globe continue to remain strong and keep the memories alive.  Here are 5 of our favorite Mobb Deep tracks.  Feel free to let us know your favorites in the comments section.

Because each artist is from a different coast–The Alchemist from California and Havoc from New York– the combination between them ties in quaint sounds from their cities. The sound is oddly still very grimy with a New York style. There is a theme in the LP easily reminiscent of an early Jay-Z or Nas with Havoc’s rap style and his hustler mentality. A daunting New York State of mind is found throughout a majority of lyrics in songs including “Seize Power,” “Maintain (F**k How You Feel),” and “The Gun Holds A Drum” feat. Prodigy. The production even seems to have a bit of Dr.Dre‘s production senses just slowed down a bit. Both artist’s do an A1 job at representing different sounds from their upbringing.

There are only a few features on the album including Method Man, Cormega, and Prodigy as mentioned above. Prodigy and Havoc have good chemistry together on songs considering they were in Mobb Deep together. Method Man and Cormega are also from New York and have a similar flow to Havoc. These few features give a couple different sparks throughout the LP which is nice, but Havoc’s flow rides well on its own for the majority of the album.

Montreal’s Kaytranada shows no signs of slowing down after recently linking with the legendary Mobb Deep for their newest Queensbridge anthem “My Block” off their new album The Infamous Mobb Deep, which dropped on Tuesday. Originally recorded at Red Bull Studios in New York City, “My Block” sees the virtuoso beat maker take his production skills to new heights and both veterans Havoc & Prodigy bless the hard-hitting single with vintage verses.  With a deep appreciation for Mobb Deep’s classic catalog dating back to his childhood, this new single solidifies Kaytranada as a fresh new force in hip-hop.

Mobb Deep‘s eighth studio album, The Infamous Mobb Deep, isn’t officially dropping until April 1st. However, Prodigy and Havoc have taken to Pandora to offer fans a free stream of the double album a week before it becomes available for purchase. The Infamous Mobb Deep consists of new material on the first disc and unreleased music from their critically-acclaimed sophomore LP The Infamous on the second. As certified veterans with ironclad credibility in the rap game, the Queens MCs recruited a number of high profile guest features for the first album, including Snoop Dogg, Busta Rhymes, Nas, Bun B and Juicy J. And, from what we have heard of the new material so far, neither half of the legendary duo has lost much of a step over the past 20 years.

Prodigy and Havoc have been steadily building towards the April 1st release of their first joint album as Mobb Deep since 2006. Today, they dropped the appropriately-titled “Legendary,” featuring Southern veterans Bun B and Juicy J. The track is more radio-friendly than the typical raw Mobb Deep fare, maintaining the quality of previous releases we’ve heard from The Infamous Mobb Deep. “Legendary” is another strong track and should only help build anticipation for the Queens rappers’ long-awaited eighth LP.
