Bright lights and skyscrapers. This is the city of dreams also home to the east coast’s most prestigious event, Governors Ball Music Festival. Gov Ball is 3-days of non-stop summer fun consisting of games, great food and some of the biggest names music has to offer. Thousands of people from across the country gathered to be in attendance for another legendary weekend in New York City.

The weekend’s temperature was just right and the weather cooperated even after threatening us with lightning all week. A sea of fans covered the majority or Randell’s Island Park. Whether you wanted to sit and soak up the sun or get in a competitive game of Giant Jenga, there was something for everyone. Mini golf was a cool addition to the festival. Groups of friends went around the course swinging their clubs while they waited for their favorite artists to play. Maybe trying out new food is your thing. There was an uncountable number of food trucks and vendors to choose from. Unique food is usually a typical component to music festivals. The Ramen Burger was a popular choice and the Spring Roll Burrito was another. The only down side was the ridiculously long lines you’d have to wait in if you wanted one. 

The 2018 installment of Gov Ball was just another undeniable classic. The lineup was strong and included performances from Lil Uzi Vert, Kali Uchis, Billie Eilish, Khalid, Damian Marley, 2 Chainz, Galantis, 6lack and many more. Easily one of the best lineups of the year.

Four stages with a wide variety of acts were placed across the park; The Bacardi stage, the American Eagle stage, the Honda stage and the Governors Ball stage. Each stage had artists to look forward to no matter what genre of music you’re really into. One of the most popular performances came from Pusha T, who was a replacement act for BROCKHAMPTON. The release of his latest album, Daytona, is his highest charting album to date and is considered album of the year by many. King Push may be the most relevant artist in Hip Hop right now after his feud with Drake reached new heights.

Another notable performance came from Gov Ball headliner, Travis Scott. La Flame is one of the greatest entertainers of our generation. His on stage presence and energy is unmatched. Some fans stood in the crowd all day to secure their spot to see the performance. Travis popped out from the below the stage as 20-foot flames shot up towards the sky. The opening song was an unreleased song reportedly titled, “Stargazing,” off his upcoming album, Astroworld. The constant jumping of thousands of fans in the crowd looked like waves moving in the ocean. Shock Wes, new and upcoming NY rapper, joined Travis on stage as a special guest. Many other special guests were in attendance. 50 Cent joined Eminem to close out the festival, Chris Rock came to enjoy the show and many other celebrities were in attendance.

Governors Ball 2018 was nothing less than spectacular over the 3 days. Their founders and promoters have repeatedly put on a remarkable event and continues to provide fans with the most satisfying experience possible. We’re already looking forward to what 2019’s chapter will hold.

Governors Ball NYC

Organizers of the 2016 Governors Ball festival announced earlier today that day 3 has been cancelled entirely due to severe weather and storm warnings. In an effort to protect the safety of fans, artists and festival staff alike, the doors will unfortunately be closed and refunds will be given.

“Sunday, June 5th of Gov Ball 2016 has officially been cancelled, due to severe weather and a high likelihood of lightning in the area. The safety of fans, artists and crew always comes first,” reads a statement given on the official website.

With Sunday performers such as Vince Staples, Joey Bada$$, and headlining act Kanye West affected by the cancellation, fans are understandably upset. Check out some reactions below.

In regards to refunds, only those who purchased tickets through the official website will be receiving their money back. While some fans may be walking away without compensation, those who did purchase tickets directly through the website can expect their refund within 21 days.

While there has been no mention of a make-up-date, certain artists have taken to Twitter to let fans know they will still be putting on shows tonight in NYC, anywhere they can.

In similar fashion, the Summer Jam festival village stage has also been shut down today due to weather. Scheduled sets from Chance The Rapper, Post Malone, Desiigner, and Tory Lanez have been canceled, however those performing on the main stadium stage will proceed as planned.

While its beginning to look like fans at either festival just can’t catch a break today, it seems some of the acts affected by the weather might have a little something up their sleeve in order to salvage the day. Considering the cryptic tweets from Travis Scott hours ago, is quite possible cancelled artists from both shows could be teaming up to bring the people of NYC something regardless of the weather.

As fans and ticket holders continue waiting out the weather in hopes of some sort of compensatory performance, the Governors Ball’s official website has tried to offer up some reassurance. “Stay tuned for more information, and please bear with us. It’s that moment that every Tri-State Area inhabitant has been waiting for: the announcement of the lineup for the 2015 Governors Ball! Each year, the best in the business are corralled on Randall’s  Island for three days of hot performances. This year’s lineup doesn’t disappoint. Our boy Drake will be headlining! Also on the docket are prolific producer Flying Lotus, West Coast killers Atmosphere, as well as up-and-coming British rapper Bishop Nehru.

Gambino / Glover put himself through a number of performance hurdles that let him test the shark-waters of failure that he so nakedly wades through in his music. As if his stream-of-embarrassed-and-embarrassing-consciousness lyrics weren’t enough, Gambino decided with almost rehearsed relaxation to spit a quick freestyle. He’s a veteran of the art, but doing so on a festival stage is unexpected from anyone (outside of SuperNat) and wholly commendable. During the freestyle, Gambino opened a vein as he so often does on record, speaking to his nerves about being placed in the same time slot as The Strokes. That soul bearing quickly lead to a victorious place, though, finding Gambino boasting about the crowd he pulled in spite of the odds. The triumph continued through the verses: “They’re mad because I got to Chance first!” he spit off the top of his head, somehow devising some true-to-life commentary at a moment’s notice.

Gambino’s bond with Chance would be on further display just minutes later when the shirtless oddball arrived on stage to do an instrumentally-improvised version of “Favorite Song.” What happened next was the true highlight of the set, and perhaps the day as a whole. Chance, who is “featured” on “The Worst Guys” from Gambino’s Because The Internet (appearing only on the one-line chorus) decided to unleash his witty and wicked guest verse for the track for the Governors Ball crowd. It’s the same verse that we heard him drop randomly on a Toca Tuesday a while back, but it’s far less wonky-sounding here. It was also particularly fitting for Gambino’s set: Chance found himself spitting his lines about how her mama “tried to André Benjamin me” just a few feet from André himself. The moment tightened the laces on two generations of pioneers for intimate hip-hop, and it got the crowd (especially women) going and then some.

The Gambino festivities ended with the snarling, offensive, and, when played by this live band, downright epic “Bonfire.” This was an act beyond simply gassing the party-fire he’d steadily kept rolling throughout his set, it was a move of middle finger-ism, a final, blistering show of shamelessness emerging from a cloud of doubt and doubters.

The feeling appeared mutual as Chance weaved onto the stage to the sound of “Everybody’s Something,” a giving, rather than grabbing, selection, as opposed to the ear-catching and party-starting “Good Ass Intro” that kicked off most of his sets in the last year. Chance, supercharged by The Social Experiment, soared with legitimate emotion even in the first moments of his performance. The song felt, as was surely intended in its creation, like a love letter to all listening. The choice was a markedly mature one; a sentiment Chance would repeat and double as the show went on.

Chance’s repeat of the wonderful Arthur surprise from a week back was another gift of sentiment, as was his performance of the brilliant, as-of-yet unnamed track that he performed at Art Basel a while back. Somehow, it seemed that much of the crowd knew the hook to this unreleased gem, chanting with Chance before the song’s drop: “I believe if I fly, I’ll probably end up somewhere in paradise.” As a further testament to this show’s focus being the heart, Chance’s GovBall rendition of this gospel-tinged track featured far more emphatic and dramatic singing than can be heard in earlier recordings. Perhaps it’s because Chance truly had the choir that he hopes for in that song’s chorus. As billboard noted, Chance now has the kind of magnetic, dedication-inspiring pull that can amass a sizeable crowd for the act an hour and a half before him at a festival. (Deafheaven certainly saw the benefit, audience-wise, of Chance’s seemingly across-the-board appeal.)

Chance raised some heart rates in the show’s middle. “Smoke Again” and “Pusha Man” absolutely slapped when backed by the ever-sharpening Social Experiment and propelled forward by a crowd of stoned diehards. However, the emotion came to center stage again for the show’s final act: Chance paused briefly before “Paranoia” to speak, vague and troubled, about Chicago violence. Once the haunting, piercing track had closed, he “finished” the show with “Everything’s Good,” which was morphed, by the Social Experiment, into a tune lively enough for Chance to simultaneously juke and speed-rap to.  The encore was a song made for encores if there ever was one: the sky-high “Chain Smoker.” Chance hit every high note and had the entire tent clapping along in amazement and gratitude. “This part, right here, right now, right here, this part my shit,” Chance screeched with glee, his excitement uncontrollably contagious. Chance The Rapper is very nearly Chance The Phenomenon, and if his live shows continue at this caliber, it will be quicker than the man can move his feet.
