Boston’s Michael Christmas is chubby, black, and has an affinity for blunts and self-deprecating hip-hop. Just like Michael Cera! Right? Well, watching the video for “Michael Cera” and reading the lyrics, it looks like Christmas wants us to believe that he and the human overcooked noodle that is the Superbad actor are one and the same. Christmas spins of joke after Cera-centric joke, the crown jewel of which has to be “And as I practice using all this force in my garage / having dreams bout throwing Maeby mixed with Ann in a menage,” which incorporates both the iconically embarrassing scene from Arrested Development and the names of Cera’s ill-fated love interests from the show. The clip and accompanying song are all the more impressive when looked at in the context of Christmas‘ last release, “Daily.” Whereas “Daily” was gloomy and gross, “Michael Cera” is %100 goofy nerd charm. A clear channel runs through both works though–Christmas‘ plain yet clever style and matter-of-fact delivery are on full display in both videos, and formidable talent Goodwin directs each video with comic finesse and the same black outer frame. New Video: Michael Christmas – “Daily”

The visuals for Boston rapper Michael Christmas‘ “Daily” are at once inviting and funny and unnervingly seedy. Michael‘s non-chalant, every-day delivery and lyrical style are highlighted by the camera’s continuous jump-cuts from image to odd image. As Michael narrates his sluggish day, we watch it unfold: he wakes up, masturbates, feels like Brendan Frasier, falls back asleep, plasters his face to the air conditioner, plasters it to the TV, tries to smoke in the shower, and then leaves home to leer at passing girls and eat wings with friends. With a lyrical style as (intentionally) ordinary as Christmas‘ on “Daily,” it was important that three things be on point: the beat–a sleepy, dark bass wobble–the rapper’s comedic chops–perfect timing and great sense of how to use his body– and the video. All the elements lined up, and “Daily” is an extremely entertaining two-and-a-half minutes. Hats off to director Goodwin, too.
