2DopeBoyz called it Gee Watts’ “best project to date”—and you can listen to it right here! Watts just released his full album, Kansas City State of Mind for free streaming via soundcloud. The full-release follows singles “Symptoms” and “The Triumph”

This 13 track release hits hard, and lives up to the hype with production from Mike Hurst, B4Lasers, MonzterMuzik, South House, and 1Bounce. Flowing from harsh, caustic street raps to slower, sexy bedroom jams, each track cuts deep in some way. You can stream the full album below:

Gee Watts’ Double Feature “Gator Dance / Dreams” Is His Best Yet

We’ve had our eye on Gee Watts for some time now, and with the stark, piercing double video for “Gator Dance” and “Dreams,” he’s reached another new high. In the first half, we have an older man doing a sort of sanded-down, thai chi version of pop and- ocking as “Gator Dance,” plays its tongue twisting visions of project pain (“Coronors calling Kiki, auntie funeral grieving / mama’s a wreck she be, stressing no longer eating,”). In the second half, the visuals take a bit of a hit, leaving behind the magnetic dancer for a more typical shot of Gee, seated in an abandoned building, rapping to himself. The track’s vibrant lyrics and flow, and Gee’s pinpoint passion while performing it, keep the video highly entertaining. This Kansas City MC has now come closer than ever to the level he’ll need to maintain if he wants to ride atop the tidal wave of thoughtful underground rap that he clearly aspires to.

Today, the Kansas City newcomer released his Distant Dreams Music-helmed LP 199x, a 14-track project featuring two bonus tracks. Watts remains unsigned, but with his strong lyricism and an ear for smooth, buttery beats, you can expect to hear more from the Kansas City product going forward. New Music: Gee Watts – “Belly”

The KC wordsmith lets loose another cut from his #BibleStudy series, entitled “Belly,” and it’s overflowing with ideas and emotion. The stacked-up flows and desolate imagery hit a peak around the two minute mark: “Started out an innocent, gradually lost benevolence / Benefit maybe when Hades is conditions we livin in / witnessing babies light up maybes then light up the crib you in / rock-a-bye lullabies, screams, sirens, semis spittin’ and shit.” Watts can no longer contain all of the connections he draws from the world of innocence to innocence lost, and it pours out in rapturous fashion. 199x (1990 Something) is on the way.

New Music: Gee Watts – “Zombie Juice Freestyle”

Gee Watts gets his wordplay on in the second entry in his #BibleStudy series. “I school boys, give ’em Qs, then they move / Abstract soul, I do what them top dogs do,” he rhymes, spinning the names of some of the game’s biggest up-and-comers into lines that are both relevant to the song and potent on their own. Gee goes on to report what he sees and knows “cinder block bars live from the beast belly / streets sing a sad song, murder be the medley.” It’s good to know Gee‘s got so much music on the way.

New Music: Gee Watts Feat. Stik Figa – “Church”

Arkutec’s drums knock to life, a pained stutter-step of a soul sample joins in, and the dreary, repentant vibe for “Church” is set. Gee Watts‘ Kansas City-bred, seen-too-much grit is in full effect, pushing the ills of the world to the surface with a tightly-sewn flow: “Tragic they wield, blast and get killed / fast as dragons in lambs’ clothing so imagine the real.” Recently, we premiered “199x (Sixteen Nineteen)” from Watts‘ upcoming tape 199x (1990 Never). “Church,” while still a solid, meaningful track that shows progression from Watts‘ recent (stellar) tape, Watts Up, isn’t quite on the level of “(Sixteen Nineteen),” but that’s to be expected: “Church” isn’t going to land on the upcoming tape. Instead, it’s kicking off a series of Wednesday Gee Watts releases entitled the #BibleStudy series. In short, even Watts‘ backup tracks are dope.

Video Premier: Gee Watts – “199x Sixteen Nineteen”

April’s Watts Up found Kansas City’s Gee Watts exhibiting the promise of what baseball scouts would call a “five-tool player,” meaning one with outstanding talent in each aspect of the game. Watts has punchlines (“Pimp C was tryna reveal something before they screwed him / Choppy society, more corrupt than Daz music”), charisma (“Watts Up“), wisdom (“Premature Hate“), a great ear for beats (just check the whole tape) and a steady, self-assured flow (“Watts Riot“). Now, Gee blesses us with the first drop from the upcoming 199x (pronounced “1990 Never”). “199x Sixteen Nineteen” borrows the projects title to expand on its meaning; as Gee asks toward the video’s end, “Black history started 1619!? / So you mean the first 16 my niggas wasn’t seen?” Gee knows that there’s more to his people than meets the history books, and there’s more to this video than meets the eye on the first go. Different lines appear and reappear as part of the track or as acapella, adding a sense of life-collage, making the video both very sporatic but also satisfying and complete.
