A toy drive sponsored by Tiny Impact Co., who donated over 200 toys and electronics, from 32’ TVs, life size dolls, headphones, cookware, games and more to the My Friends House Foundation, got everyone into the spirit of giving, and DJ L Double E got the packed crowd turned all the way up. The “Fa La La Holiday Bash” delivered a magical time for everyone who was able to attend…the only sad part is knowing we have to wait until next Christmas to experience it again.

One year after G The Mastermind released his thrilling tale “Murder She Wrote”, he’s back again with a twisted remix featuring the woman’s perspective of their dangerous holds on love. The track features the OG veteran Gangsta Boo, Shawnna (previously of DTP) and Queen of the Ring’s own Babs (Previously of P. Diddy’s Making the Band) On the track, each of the femcees lays a hot verse over the same fanatical bass heavy production filled with even more suspense all tied with The Mastermind’s same melodic chorus. The remix will leave you wanting for more and G’s ability to combine great artists especially female rappers in a time where there seems to be so few is truly something epic. 90’s revivalist hip-hop is often trite and contrived, consisting of rappers desperate for creativity who paraphrase freshness from the past without offering anything new.  Gangsta Boo and Beatking’s new mixtape Underground Cassette Tape Music is a glaring exception. It incorporates elements from Gangsta Boo’s past verses with Three 6 Mafia, while simultaneously offering fresh perspective relative to our generation of Southern trap music. It’s a genuine incarnation of the Dirty South. Beatking said in a recent interview with Noisey that “Underground Cassette Tape Music sounds like some shit you’d be jammin’ from Swishahouse in 1999, from Screw in 1999, or if you was jammin’ DJ Paul and Lord Infamous’ Come to Hell with Me II in 1995.” Beatking and Gansta Boo enhance the tape with features from artists such as Danny Brown, OJ da Juiceman, Paul Wall, Daz Dillinger and Lil’ Flip. This is a fantastic tape. Beatking perfectly surmised the style of it when he said “[his beats on this record] let you know what trap music would sound like before it was called trap and was just hard music.”

Big K.R.I.T.: When you listen to the whole album from the start to the ending, it is just so soulful but organic at the same time. Being introduced to Organized Noize back then was like hearing the live basslines and the 808s with cowbells and the snares. Back then I was into a lot of 2Pac and Biggie, but OutKast‘s music had a different kind of swing to it and a different type of vibe to it with the live instrumentation going on and the background vocals, but they also incorporated these hip-hop drum patterns. However they made these records, the album all came together and was so cohesive.

David Banner: What’s funny is, the reprise [of “Player’s Ball”] is actually my favorite beat. It was just so soulful, the way they arranged the pianos over something that was already amazing—the drums was so banging.

Trae Tha Truth: I think as a whole, once you heard the project being introduced this way, you could tell that somebody was a pimp—or at least had that influence.

Gangsta Boo: The first time I heard André I thought he was a really dope lyricist. Still ’til this day, he’s before his time. Big Boi is the same, they’re very equally talented, but they’re so different they’re crazy. I got to work with them both later on Stankonia. Big Boi used to have one of my songs on my voicemail—it was Three 6 Mafia’s “We Ain’t Playing With You” but it was my verse—and I thought that was really cool. I knew [Big] Gipp’s ex-wife, I was best friends with them when I was about 17 because I was in Atlanta a lot. They were pretty big fans and it was an opportunity where they felt like they wanted a female like me on Stankonia. They hit me up for it and it was right in the peak of my career when I was with Hypnotize Minds. In the studio, Big Boi bought me weed—it was purple, and I’ll never forget it.

My god, this shit cray.

Radioactive, is coming and if the rest of the album sounds anything like “Throw It Up,” Yelawolf will have quite the record on his hands.

“Throw It Up” looks on paper like a bit of a strange brew, but stellar production and strong performances on all fronts make it a winner.

And Yela is simply pitch perfect: his flow is sharp as ever and suitably runs the gauntlet from accessibly impressive to “holy shit he raps really fast” level insanity. For my money, Yelawolf is, next to Kendrick Lamar, the most technically proficient and consistently stunning rapper in the current crop of up and comers. Exciting to know that he’s not taming his flow for his major label debut.
