Bad Boy’s Reunion Concert was not the only show in Philadelphia over the weekend. State Property’s Neef Buck hosted a Neef Buck and Friends concert, at South Philly’s TLA on Saturday night. The concert featured cuts from the State Property representative’s new Forever Do Me 8 album along with a few special surprises.

The concert featured opening acts like rising star and battle rapper Quilly who dropped Quilly 3 in March.

The main event was electric when Neef entered the stage spitting rhymes from the Young Gunz’s 2004 album Tough Luv. Neef took it back with tracks like Take It How You Want It, Grown Man, Life We Choose and Never Take Me Alive, a track featuring both he, Young Chris and Jay-Z.

Fellow Young Gunner, Young Chris was also on stage helping out Neef along with Freeway. Freeway performed classic State Property and Roc-a-fella hits like What We Do and Flipside, which was much to the delight of the packed house at TLA.

Neef Bucks recently released Forever Do Me 8 has done well. Additionally, he has successfully launched a successful Forever Ever Do Me clothing line.

Torae‘s been around the hip-hop industry for a long time now. It’s safe to say he’s one of the few contemporary New York rappers who, sonically, isn’t influenced too much by rap of other cultures- the boom bap that’s resident to east coast hip-hop, mainly New York, is alive with a steady pulse in Torae’s work.

Pete Rock, another New York native, and prominent figure in the 90s as a part of Pete Rock & CL Smooth, also sticks close to the east coast roots, but goes even further in his instrumentation to throw down welcome mats at other African-American genres. Jazz played a heavy part in forming hip-hop, and Pete Rock is clearly heavily drawn by it, having elements of it incorporated in plenty of his instrumentals. It’s no surprise that the production on “Get Down,” one of Torae’s tracks off Entitled, has that old school flair to it, along with a little taste of jazz.

A remix was recently released, available to stream above, featuring Freeway of State Property, and Styles P of The LOX. The track takes a time warp and brings back an old school sound many don’t incorporate in their music today. Torae raps:

“Stay true to the sound, adjectives and nouns/
Tell ‘em I get down, repped for the underground”

One half of the Young Gunz, Neef Buck can’t stop and won’t stop putting out video content.

Yesterday, the Philadelphia native dropped the video for I Got It, a single from his forthcoming FDM8 mixtape.

“I’m excited,” Neef Buck told me by phone. “This is the one.”

Neef recently traded favorite moments of Philadelphia 76ers guard and recent inductee to the Basketball Hall Of Fame, Allen Iverson on Scoop B Radio. He also recalls how dope AI was to the city of Philadelphia and how AI ranks among sports legends in the city (and even partying with AI back in the day). Check out Neef Buck on Scoop B Radio

Mannnnn, Freeway and Merc Beatz are dropping some fire music as of late. They previously collaborated on “Heaven”, Free’s first track back on the scene since he was diagnosed with kidney failure. Today, they drop the soulful “Wasted”, which adds to their catalogue of great hip-hop songs. Freeway addresses his current status at the end of the track as well, stating:

“Oh by the way I’m on the list, that new kidney on the way. Philly we in here!”

When an artist endures a traumatizing event and lives to tell the tale, you expect to hear some great material from that person. Freeway has returned to the game after being diagnosed with kidney failure in late September, so he decided to drop a new track called “Heaven,” a song with a soulful sample and realness in its bars. With Merc Beatz behind the boards, it’s a throwback to the simple times when sped up soul samples and dope drum patterns ran the game. It is uplifting to hear the Philly legend doing well and out here still making the quality music we know him for.

Southern California emcee Haseeb teams up with producer Curtiss King and Philly legend, Freeway for the hot new single, “Deep Gritty,”. The Curtiss King production oozes with soul as piercing guitar strings give the silky smooth beat that gritty edge needed to carry the heavyweight bars brought to the table by rising emcee Haseeb and lauded lyricist, Freeway.

“Deep Gritty” is the second single off Haseeb and Curtiss King’s upcoming collaborative EP, The Daisy Chain.

Mobb Deep performed some of their hit singles that included “Shook Ones” and “Quiet Storm.” Though the festival took place in BK, Queens was definitely representing in the crowd when Mobb Deep hit the stage. Lion Babe brought the smooth, shagadelic sounds to the festival and easily balanced out the hip hop festival with some cool vibes.

Overall the show was entertaining but many couldn’t wait for Common to hit the stage. Though Common didn’t get on stage until about an hour after his expected time, he closed out The BK Hip Hop Festival strong! A combination of his hit tracks and a surprise appearance from BK’s very own, Foxy Brown, the extra hour was worth the wait!

It goes without saying, Brooklyn Bodega knows how to put together an unforgettable show. Already looking forward to next year!
