Premier: Frank Leone – “Walnut Tableture”

Today, we give thanks to Frank Leone for dropping one of the most enjoyable minutes-plus of hip-hop that we’ve seen in some time. “Walnut Tableture,” the latest tide-me-over as we wait for Frank‘s Enter Wild LP, finds Frank rapping over “igital_Short” from Chuk Le Garcon‘s EchoLocation tape, found here. In just a few releases, Frank has already displayed immense variability, covering moods ranging from dark and disturbed, to jittery and slick (to sunken malice), to now, jazzy and light. The bars are among some of Frank’s strongest, particularly in the tongue-twisting and name-checking department:”So gon and prove nothing and hope that it don’t stick / Stop living on the Innanet you ain’t like Vic / Gadd Mic Vic Vicious onna Mic roll a swish and wish.” A further testament to the young Chicago talent’s many abilities: he’s responsible for the album artwork too. New Video: Frank Leone Feat. Monster Mike – “Monsters”

The horror-movie inspired clip for “Monsters” from Frank Leone’s upcoming Enter Wild LP, impresses in both its sharpness and erratic vibe. The camera swings around Frank and brute, boastful guest Monster Mike, as they show us all the horrible torture they’re getting ready to inflict on the game. The clip is directed by Peter Campbell, who is also responsible for the video for Donnie Trumpet, Chance The Rapper and Vic Mensa‘s “Zion.” If you want a lighter joint from Frank, check out “JuneLiFE” here.

New Video: Frank Leone – “LiFE”

Meet Frank Leone, a slick-tongued 18-year-old rapper/producer from Chicago with a knack for strange musical left turns. Both of those attributes are on great display here for this double video, which begins with the rolling rapids of “JuneLiFE,” and takes a lean-inspired swerve into darkness for “DOOM Life.” While “JuneLiFE” is the more lively and accessible of the two, both literally showing us the artist in plain daylight and figuratively putting his sound (and double time ability) on clear display, it’s “DOOM Life,” that proves even more impressive as it features a murkier Frank who weaves in and out of his shadowy beat, occasionally swallowing his own voice with a demonic pitch-shift. In 30 seconds flat, “DOOM Life,” which is the world’s first taste of Frank‘s next project, Enter Wild, steals the show and incites serious excitement for what’s to come.

New Music: Frank Leone – “JuneLIFE”

Chicago’s Frank Leone hit us with his new single this morning, featuring production and guitar from dhjelmstad. The track covers a wild range of emotion, opening with an eerie sample cutting in and out, sounding like the tortured soul of a computer. When the beat drops though, Frank‘s smirking, smooth-yet-sharp delivery signals a more celebratory tone, and then when his verse ends and a clanging band comes in to back him up, we get the sense of an even rowdier time. Frank himself said of the track, “I released it in July instead of June because the point of the song is that once something’s over, there’s no reason you can’t continue the good feelings that came with it above and beyond however long it lasts, just stay positive.” Keep an eye on Frank Leone, he’s made music with Chance The Rapper, Vic Mensa, and a load of other Chicago talent. This Chi-town movement is unstoppable, and somehow, Frank stands out. Enjoy the strange tunes below, and get ready–he says a self-directed “JuneLIFE” video is coming soon.
