<p><strong>Federico Massa</strong>&#8216;s latest piece was commissioned for a cinema wall. The owners of the cinema asked the Italian street artist, based in <strong>New York</strong>, to include superheroes in his project. The artist decided to follow orders but, of course, add his own twist. <strong>Federico</strong> painted traditional heroes such as Spiderman, Superman, Batman, Hulk and many more. &#8220;I tried to maintain my own [original] vision by changing the costumes. I tried making the composition as weird as I could.&#8221; By switching the characters&#8217; costumes, the artist makes a commentary on super-heroes and their inter-changeable roles, their often bland, product-like reasons for being. Perhaps most notably, Batman and Superman are victim of a direct switch here. Knowing that these two superheroes were the protagonists of two sequels in the past year, it seems more than likely that this piece, painted for a cinema, depicting characters within a theater room, is a harsh commentary on the movie industry. This piece is quite a departure from <strong>Massa&#8217;s</strong> traditional pieces, but if you look closer, you will find one of his original characters making an appearance. &#8220;That&#8217;s my real signature!&#8221; he explains.</p>

<div><a href="http://respect-mag.com/exclusive-interview-with-federico-massa-the-man-behind-cruz/"><strong>Federico Massa</strong></a> AKA <a href="http://www.iehttp://www.ienacruz.com"><strong>CRUZ </strong></a>was  recently spotted in <strong>Brooklyn</strong>, between <strong>Myrtle Ave</strong> and <strong>Evergreen St</strong>. His large mural entitled <strong>&#8220;Corrient</strong><strong>es Furiosas Que Acarician Y Que Destrozan&#8221;</strong> (translated &#8220;Furious Currents That Can Caress and That Can Destroy&#8221;) creates a lively marine world.</div>

<div>The words of poet <strong>Modesto Flako Jimenez </strong> are added into the piece. Incorporating  words in murals is always challenging. You never want to hear the voice of the artist, you want to see it. However, the line of poetry is subtle enough to allow the viewer to read into it what he wishes to see.</div>
<div><a href="http://respect-mag.com/street-art-exclusive-cruz-remains-an-enigma/2low/" rel="attachment wp-att-52724"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" data-attachment-id="52724" data-permalink="https://respect-mag.com/2012/12/street-art-exclusive-cruz-remains-an-enigma/2low/" data-orig-file="https://i0.wp.com/respect-mag.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/12/2low.jpg?fit=1476%2C984&amp;ssl=1" data-orig-size="1476,984" data-comments-opened="1" data-image-meta="{&quot;aperture&quot;:&quot;8&quot;,&quot;credit&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;camera&quot;:&quot;Canon EOS 5D Mark III&quot;,&quot;caption&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;created_timestamp&quot;:&quot;1329096764&quot;,&quot;copyright&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;focal_length&quot;:&quot;19&quot;,&quot;iso&quot;:&quot;200&quot;,&quot;shutter_speed&quot;:&quot;0.016666666666667&quot;,&quot;title&quot;:&quot;&quot;}" data-image-title="cruz" data-image-description="" data-image-caption="" data-medium-file="https://i0.wp.com/respect-mag.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/12/2low.jpg?fit=1476%2C984&amp;ssl=1" data-large-file="https://i0.wp.com/respect-mag.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/12/2low.jpg?fit=640%2C426&amp;ssl=1" class=" wp-image-52724 aligncenter" title="cruz" src="https://i0.wp.com/respect-mag.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/12/2low.jpg?resize=650%2C531" alt="" width="650" height="531" data-recalc-dims="1" /></a></div>
<div>Softness meets insanity. The figure of his signature portrait (square headed man) is tense. <strong>Federico</strong> plays with light to create texture. He softly incorporates circular shapes, giving the tentacles a pearl-like purity. There is a contrast between the claustrophobic sense the tentacles create and the softness of their delicacy &#8212; they almost seem to be caressing the whale.</div>
<div>The artist keeps on oscillating between universes and remains an enigma. What is next for <strong>Cruz</strong>?</div>

<p>A <strong>Mexican </strong>landscape has struck the bricked walls of <strong><strong>Brooklyn</strong></strong>. <a href="http://respect-mag.com/exclusive-interview-with-federico-massa-the-man-behind-cruz/"><strong>Cruz</strong></a> has innovated his use of signature portrait by adding a body to his figure. <strong>Federico Massa</strong> uses different textures and the depth of the walls to create a riveting movement. The viewers attention is captured by the enormous lizard moving nonchalantly through a desert. The birds represent the viewers. They are as surprised and inquisitive by the piece as us.   <strong>Cruz</strong> used a pepper pendant as a symbol of Mexican culture. One might wonder whether it has protective powers against bad or  if it is used to cast a spell&#8230;</p>
<p>Enjoy and join the ride.</p>

<p>Let&#8217;s set the scene: brick walls crumbing, tossed cigarettes burning and broken fire hydrants spraying. Facing a building that resembles a slum appears one narrow metallic door on a large red building with the fading number 144. No windows and no light, but a lively figure appears. <a href="http://respect-mag.com/street-art-cruz-plasters-smiles-to-the-walls/"><strong>Federico Massa</strong></a>, aka <strong>Cruz</strong> welcomes us into his studio. Wearing a black polo and dark blue jeans, the 31-year-old Milano looks ten years younger.</p>
<p><strong>Federico</strong> moved to <strong>New York</strong> less than a decade ago, where he “discovered the mexican culture, food and music,” he says as some traditional Mexican music emanates from his laptop.</p>

<p><strong>New York</strong> is his muse. <strong>“Mother Fucker Rose“ </strong>(the above picture) was created for an exhibition. “We are in New York so it is full of rats,” he says. “If you look at it his skulls &#8212; it looks fun and the roses gives the piece a different light – its so red, it looks like the rat is going to give you something nice but in the end it’s not – it’s poisonous.” This sums up a lot about Federiccos’ work: he pays  meticulous attention to details and symbolism.</p>
<p style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://respect-mag.com/exclusive-interview-with-federico-massa-the-man-behind-cruz/screen-shot-2012-10-16-at-11-48-25-am/" rel="attachment wp-att-50644"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" data-attachment-id="50644" data-permalink="https://respect-mag.com/2012/10/exclusive-interview-with-federico-massa-the-man-behind-cruz/screen-shot-2012-10-16-at-11-48-25-am/" data-orig-file="https://i0.wp.com/respect-mag.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/10/Screen-Shot-2012-10-16-at-11.48.25-AM.png?fit=794%2C497&amp;ssl=1" data-orig-size="794,497" data-comments-opened="1" data-image-meta="{&quot;aperture&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;credit&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;camera&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;caption&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;created_timestamp&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;copyright&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;focal_length&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;iso&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;shutter_speed&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;title&quot;:&quot;&quot;}" data-image-title="Poster ft  Berse " data-image-description="" data-image-caption="" data-medium-file="https://i0.wp.com/respect-mag.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/10/Screen-Shot-2012-10-16-at-11.48.25-AM.png?fit=794%2C497&amp;ssl=1" data-large-file="https://i0.wp.com/respect-mag.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/10/Screen-Shot-2012-10-16-at-11.48.25-AM.png?fit=640%2C400&amp;ssl=1" class=" wp-image-50644 aligncenter" title="Poster ft  Berse " src="https://i0.wp.com/respect-mag.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/10/Screen-Shot-2012-10-16-at-11.48.25-AM-640x400.png?resize=576%2C360" alt="" width="576" height="360" data-recalc-dims="1" /></a></p>
<p style="text-align: right;"><span id="more-50639"></span><span style="text-align: right;">In collaboration with</span><strong style="text-align: right;"> <a href="http://koikoikoi.com/2010/01/fabio-berse-roncatos-fighters/"> Fabio &#8220;Berse&#8221; Roncato</a></strong></p>
<p style="text-align: right;">
<h1></h1>
<p style="text-align: left;">
<p style="text-align: left;"><strong>Cruz</strong>’s logo is a small <strong>iena</strong>. Animals are an important component of his pieces. He explains, “the iena is a self portrait, my logo, I started eight years ago and I was really focused on these. I did t-shirts and more, I used it like my logo, my symbol, my character. People who know me see part of me in the iena.” After spending a few hours with the artist, you can see it too. He is a very calm man, but extremely passionate and enthusiastic. In his eyes emanates a touch of crazy, of fun. One of his favorite artists is <strong><a href="http://www.imscared.com/gallery/paintings">Greg &#8220;Craola&#8221; Simkins</a>.</strong></p>
<p style="text-align: left;">His influence is striking in <strong>Federicos</strong>’ work. <strong>Simkins</strong> plays with the similar theme of animals, he depicts them as robotic shifting creatures in a fantasy world.</p>
<p><strong>Cruz</strong> is known for enjoying experiments with different media. He has sculptures, rat skulls, printed posters, photographs and even large scale plexi-glass lamps in his studio. “I love to switch to a different kind of support. It’s more fun!” he says jubilantly. This is what his art is about: having fun, something he did not always have in Milan.</p>
<p><strong>Federiccos</strong>’ experience with the art world in Milan seem disappointing. “The people did not know anything about street art. You would have to work for an art curator and they did not know anything about street art either,” he says moving his hands in the air. “It was only for the business cause at the time street art was <em>in style. </em>But the response I received did not satisfy me as an artist. That was why I left for New York. Once I got here, I did not know anybody, I had to start all over again. You have to be driven, you need to know what you want to do.”</p>
<p>The artist always knows where he&#8217;s going, all of his pieces collide together as one unified theme appears. “I have a kind of aggressive thematic, many angry monsters but it really depends on how I feel when I do something. I do crazy, I do angry.”</p>
<p style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://respect-mag.com/exclusive-interview-with-federico-massa-the-man-behind-cruz/dsc_0002/" rel="attachment wp-att-50641"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" data-attachment-id="50641" data-permalink="https://respect-mag.com/2012/10/exclusive-interview-with-federico-massa-the-man-behind-cruz/dsc_0002/" data-orig-file="https://i0.wp.com/respect-mag.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/10/DSC_0002.jpg?fit=3227%2C2160&amp;ssl=1" data-orig-size="3227,2160" data-comments-opened="1" data-image-meta="{&quot;aperture&quot;:&quot;5.3&quot;,&quot;credit&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;camera&quot;:&quot;NIKON D60&quot;,&quot;caption&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;created_timestamp&quot;:&quot;1348219490&quot;,&quot;copyright&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;focal_length&quot;:&quot;46&quot;,&quot;iso&quot;:&quot;1400&quot;,&quot;shutter_speed&quot;:&quot;0.033333333333333&quot;,&quot;title&quot;:&quot;&quot;}" data-image-title="DSC_0002" data-image-description="" data-image-caption="" data-medium-file="https://i0.wp.com/respect-mag.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/10/DSC_0002.jpg?fit=3227%2C2160&amp;ssl=1" data-large-file="https://i0.wp.com/respect-mag.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/10/DSC_0002.jpg?fit=640%2C428&amp;ssl=1" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-50641" title="DSC_0002" src="https://i0.wp.com/respect-mag.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/10/DSC_0002-640x428.jpg?resize=640%2C428" alt="" width="640" height="428" data-recalc-dims="1" /></a></p>
<p>Currently, <strong>Cruz</strong> plays a lot with tentacles. It started while he was doing one of his signature portraits. “I love to switch supports and I love to do collaboration”  <a href="http://www.stefanortega.com"><strong>Stefano Ortega</strong></a>, a photographer, and him have been working together on creating breath taking pieces where Cruz plays around with animals.  “I love the shape of octopus and how I can work with it – it can be so freeing and at the same time very restrictive.” He even refers to it as his “octopus mood.”</p>
<p><a href="http://respect-mag.com/exclusive-interview-with-federico-massa-the-man-behind-cruz/screen-shot-2012-10-16-at-10-45-30-am/" rel="attachment wp-att-50652"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" data-attachment-id="50652" data-permalink="https://respect-mag.com/2012/10/exclusive-interview-with-federico-massa-the-man-behind-cruz/screen-shot-2012-10-16-at-10-45-30-am/" data-orig-file="https://i0.wp.com/respect-mag.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/10/Screen-Shot-2012-10-16-at-10.45.30-AM.png?fit=700%2C595&amp;ssl=1" data-orig-size="700,595" data-comments-opened="1" data-image-meta="{&quot;aperture&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;credit&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;camera&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;caption&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;created_timestamp&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;copyright&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;focal_length&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;iso&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;shutter_speed&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;title&quot;:&quot;&quot;}" data-image-title="Fede Wall " data-image-description="" data-image-caption="" data-medium-file="https://i0.wp.com/respect-mag.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/10/Screen-Shot-2012-10-16-at-10.45.30-AM.png?fit=700%2C595&amp;ssl=1" data-large-file="https://i0.wp.com/respect-mag.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/10/Screen-Shot-2012-10-16-at-10.45.30-AM.png?fit=640%2C544&amp;ssl=1" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-50652" title="Fede Wall " src="https://i0.wp.com/respect-mag.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/10/Screen-Shot-2012-10-16-at-10.45.30-AM-640x544.png?resize=640%2C544" alt="" width="640" height="544" data-recalc-dims="1" /></a></p>
<p><strong>Cruz</strong> uses many crosses in his pieces not for religious innuendos though. “The crosses in [my work]  are related to my name so I like to add crosses. I am not really into religion, I don’t like blasphemy either. I respect religion. The <em>cruz</em> in my portraits are a good connection between the Mexican culture, the Italian one and my name.” It all ties in together.</p>
<p>Their is a lot more to expect from<strong><a href="http://www.ienacruz.com"> Federico Massa</a>.</strong> His talent and ability to surprise his viewer is never ending. So lets wait and see what is coming up next.</p>
