Get your tissue box handy. The short film, The Present— created by Jacob Frey and Markus Kranzler in 2014 while they were students Filmakademie Baden-Wuerttemberg (Ludwigsburg, Germany)– is a story about a young boy who gets a new puppy. The film inspiration comes from a comic strip by Brazilian artist, Fabio Coala.

At first, the young boy seems like your typical 11-year-old. Playing video games and not wanting to go outside when his mother asks. Getting annoyed with his mother when she gets in the way of his video game but that all changes the minute she places a box in front of him and tells him it’s a present for him. Like any child would, he is ecstatic over the gift, this quickly turns to disgust when he discovers the puppy only has three legs. He quickly tosses the puppy aside, tells him to get lost and immediately goes back to his video games.

This puppy is too darn cute and determined not to be ignored and eventually he grows on the boy. The boy then proceeds to take his new friend outside and we discover a moving similarity between the two.

This film has won 59 awards since its release in 2014. It has also created buzz and jobs at Disney for the creators. According to Today, Frey’s talent in translating the comic to the screen captured the attention of Disney in 2014. Frey now lives in Los Angeles and has worked as a part of Disney’s talent development program. The animator took part in the production of the film Zootopia, and is now working on animation for the upcoming film Moana.
