Southern California rapper Doe Savage was born mid-1990’s in Long Beach, California. At 3 years old his father met an early demise to gang violence, causing Doe and his family to move to a different location after his death. Moving to Compton, Savage knew he could rap but at an early age he wanted to play basketball and be like Kobe Bryant.

He started writing rhymes at 9 years old, recording his first song at 11 ironically titled “Kobes”. He always kept a notebook on hand to write rhymes rather it was an exciting moment or bad one.

As Doe Savage grew older without his father, his lack of presence not only affected him emotionally but weighed on his character & everyday actions. It didn’t take long before he was old enough to hear the street’s war stories, praise, love & respect his father had. He wanted to immulate the same path of life. His mother was always working extra hard overtime to pay the bills as a single mom so she barely knew the activities he played part in . Choosing the streets at 15, he officially “jumped off the porch” running the streets often becoming absent from school. His aspirations for basketball suddenly came to an end, choosing the other side of opportunity where he didn’t have to be six foot tall to play. Through trial and tribulation music is what he could always fall back on for his sanity. Being in the streets taught him valuable lessons & built his impeccable character.

After losing over thirty friends to the streets, the constant trauma & deceit he couldn’t fall victim to the viscous cycle.

He wanted to see his hood on a big screen , like Kendrick Lamar did when he placed his homies in front of the White House and released it as his album cover, To Pimp A Butterfly. Studying Nipsey Hussle gave Him hope as well that that he could invest in himself and didn’t need a label to determine his success, embracing the phrase All Money in No Money out. All money was invested into his career from that point on.

Learning the ins & outs of the rap industry he took his up and down moments as an artist being a true student of the game. Staying down and constantly pushing through the tough times. His work has been recognized by some of the finest of the art from the West Coast. His most recent work consists of collabs with Glasses Malone, AD, Ft HopOutt & actively working with Suga Free’s camp, suddenly moves started to seem major but this was destined from the start. Now having a billboard off the 91 freeway in Compton promoting his brand as an artist.

RESPECT.: A city without Kobe, how will Los Angeles look when things get back to normal?
Doe Savage: It won’t be the same, I feel like there was a shift of energy when he passed, just like with Nipsey. With all he did for La and all the lives he inspired and touched , it’s definitely saddening, like who didn’t grow up shooting a ball of trash into the can yelling “Kobe” !

RESPECT.: Who are your musical influence?

Doe Savage: Lil Wayne Off tops , some of my favorite Mc’s are Jadakiss , Nas, Cassidy , I also like boosie , 2pac & Nip but for the most part Weezy F is the Goat In my books. That man is The Rap Mamba.

RESPECT.: What was life for you coming of age and what would do you want to do to make your father proud?

Doe Savage: My life was a rollercoaster coming of Age. A lot of internal battles I fought. Started and dropped out of college a few times left and came back to the hood a couple times ,these processes were crucial in my growth and me development. Had to find myself, Once I had my daughter it made me take life a bit more serious and step on the gas with this music and everything else in life I wanted to achieve. Being the best Father , Husband and family man would make my pops proud. Get rich move my people out the hood , provide for my folks is all I want in life , now that’ll make pops proud.

RESPECT.: Do you feel we are a product of our environment?

Doe Savage: That’s a good question. I want to answer that with a counter question, if you were placed in the middle of the jungle with a knife and one piece of bread to eat , would you kill?

RESPECT.: What’s your mission with the music?

Doe Savage: I used to want to be named the best but how the game has changed if you don’t use auto tune & sing a melody there’s no way they will crown you. I know I can out rap most so I seek for stability and security, as long as I can get paid to do what I love that’s dope to me .

RESPECT.: What are you working on in 2020?

Doe Savage: Expanding my brand as a whole. I dont want to be categorized as a rapper. When you hear Doe Savage , I want you to think of the artist, the entrepreneur, the father , leader , and so much more, the music will always be there.

RESPECT.: What advice do you have for the next generation about overcoming the streets?

Doe Savage: If your not in em live your life , its self inflicting trauma almost, there’s so much more to life. If your in em already, be smart and most importantly think for yourself, remember you’re a man before anything . Make sure it makes sense & F*ck how they feel .

RESPECT.: Any future collaborations with any LA artist?

Doe Savage: Me & AD about to drop the “I want Problems” video real soon. Oh yea me & free (Suga Free) got some shit on the way stay tuned fasho . You know we from different parts of the city but we rep La fasho.

RESPECT: What’s next for you?

Doe Savage: More shows for sure. I’ve been working on a couple clothing lines behind the scene. For the most part expanding my brand is the goal. Be expecting more good music too.

RESPECT.: What does RESPECT. mean to you?

Respect. is everything. Rich ,poor, black or white you can’t buy respect. It’s for the real only . If you don’t take care of your kids , family and handle your business as a Man you don’t deserve it. Respect. is Power , that power brings honor and so on.
