As if life couldn’t get any sweeter for Brooklyn documenter DJ Scripz, it has. His film, The Haitian Polo Documentary was awarded Best Documentary Film by the Motion Picture Association of Haiti, Inc’s Haitian Movie Awards.

The MPAH Movie Awards which commences in Boston, Massachussets, honors actors and filmmakers for work displayed in theaters or released on DVD.

Scripz’s The Haitian Polo Documentary focuses on New York City at a time where Polo, Nike, Fila, Tommy Hilfiger, Bally and other high end fashion was a no-brainer to have for the affluent and a necessity for the neighborhood hustler.

Haitians were also looking to have that signature look like everyone else but faced ridicule. The documentary, produced, directed and funded by DJ Scripz has been the talk of the town locally in NYC with Scripz appearing on Power 105 and Hot 97 . “Man I was so happy to receive this award,” DJ Scripz told RESPECT Magazine by phone. “It’s great to be honored for my work and this is just the beginning. It was awesome to come out to Boston, Massachussetts for the momentous occasion. Kudos to the MPAH for acknowledging our project.”

In a political climate where questions about ethnicity and issues of race at are an all-time high, it’s pretty refreshing to check out a documentary centered on race.

Last week, I checked out The Haitian Polo Documentary, a film based on the young Haitian immigrant experience in Brooklyn, New York during the 80’s and 90’s.

It’s pretty deep, honestly.

The film zeroed in on the Haitian struggle: acculturating and assimilating into the mainstream culture and being picked on for it. Simply put: they’re trying to achieve the American dream.

Can I live?

I genuinely was fascinated with it because it looked at New York City at a time where Polo, Nike, Fila, Tommy Hilfiger, Bally shoes and other high end fashion was a want for the affluent and a necessity to the neighborhood hustler. Insert Haitian’s who were looking to look like everyone else but faced ridicule, parents who may have not been interested in doling out the money for high end fashion. The documentary, produced by DJ Scripz has been the talk of the town locally in NYC with Scripz appearing on Power 105 and Hot 97 .

DJ Scripz recently discussed his journey with me recently at CBS on Brown and Scoop and will drop soon. In the interview Scripz zeroed in on young Haitians growing up in the 90’s who faced discrimination and got picked on for cultural differences.

The film features Thirstin Howl The 3rd (Original Lo-Life Founder and Hip Hop Artist), Sadat X From 90’s Hip Hop Group Brand Nubian, and Moses “Rafe” Vernau of the hit web series Money & Violence and directed by Judith Destin, MPA.
