In 2004, the increasingly popular Chappelle Show aired an episode featuring musical guests Common and Kanye West. The Chicago duo performed “The Food,” in a kitchen with Dave Chappelle hanging out on the side and a certain DJ on the wheels of steel. The man behind the turntables was DJ Dummy, Common’s DJ since 1999.

DJ Dummy, raised in Brooklyn, started his career as a result of watching his family. Both his father and brother were DJs, so it was only natural for him to pick up on the skill as well. DJ Dummy rose to fame through the battle circuit, attending numerous competitive tournaments such as the American DMC DJ Championship and Zulu Nation Battle. His infamous DJ style is to combine the verses of different songs, essentially creating new punchlines usually negatively referencing the other DJ he’s battling. DJ Dummy also tends to use more current music in his battle sets unlike the the typical beat breaks from the 1980’s most DJ’s rely on. Through the years he’s worked with several artist such as Talib Kweli, DMX, and De La Soul. Today DJ Dummy can be found on tour with J. Cole standing behind a table doing what he does best– cutting records.
