RESPECT. Premiere: Daytona Starsky Drops Debut EP ‘MOON’

The moon has been a source of inspiration for humans for millennia, and it will no doubt continue to be for as long as we exist. And as we celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Apollo 11 moon landing, self-proclaimed “space boy” Daytona Starsky releases his highly anticipated debut EP, MOON. From the futuristic and sonically rich production to the passionate vocals, the four-track project captures the moods and vibes we all associate with space travel.

Of course, none of this should be surprising if you’ve been following Starsky’s meteoric rise since early 2018, when he released his celestial visuals for the EP’s lead single, “Space Boy.” In the ensuing months, the Dutch-born, Brooklyn-based artist continued honing his sound and perfecting every element of his skill set. The results of his hard work are evident as soon as you hear the EP’s second track, “Vulture Song,” an intergalactic banger with infectious vocals. That sentiment holds true for the remaining tracks, “Electricity” and “Shooting Starts, Falling Skies,” that leave their own intoxicating mark on the listener.

MOON is the sound of an artist coming into his own and embracing the eccentricities that make his art unique. Starsky’s sound is singular and is thusly indebted to a wide range of influences who range from Andre 3000 to David Bowie. The very fact that he can pull from varying genres, from hip-hop to psychedelia to electronic music, and mix them into something so palatable is more than noteworthy; it’s almost unheard of.

RESPECT. Premiere: Daytona Starsky – “Metro Swipe” (Video)

Grab your MetroCard and get ready for an otherworldly trip through New York City in the new “Metro Swipe” video from Daytona Starsky, a Brooklyn-based, Dutch-born artist carving out an innovative and catchy niche in the world of Hip-Hop.

Like the equally unique “Space Boy” before it, “Metro Swipe” is an instantly gripping take on the genre that Starsky has injected with his own brand of psychedelia and melodic vocals. It’s trippy but not for the sake of being drugged out, because there’s something wholly organic about the Netherlands native. You can tell his passions are widespread and all his own, which is something he also brings to the visual side of his art.

The video for “Metro Swipe” centers on the idea that Starsky will be OK so long as his MetroCard has funds available, because it allows him to continue his artistic pursuits and meet up with his special lady. But rather than being a simplistic journey on a subway, the erratic and shape-shifting visuals bring a whole other life to the video and the track itself.

Starsky had a hand in the video, which he edited and also co-directed with Rich Morales, while Alex Syner was the Director of Photography. Starsky and Morales also teamed up to produce the single itself, which stems from Starsky’s upcoming MOON EP, which should be out later this year.

#PeepTheVisual: Daytona Starsky – “Space Boy”

Head straight to the moon with the Brooklyn-based, Dutch-born Daytona Starsky, a multi-talented artist who today shares the psychedelic new video for his addictive single, “Space Boy.”

Right from the jump, it’s clear that this 22-year-old Brooklyn resident isn’t about to be boxed into any genres or specific styles. On just this one track, you can hear a range of influences that Starsky seamlessly pulls together to craft a singular sound that’s all his own. While that could lead to a bit of a janky mess in the wrong hands, “Space Boy” is the polar opposite.

It’s a wildly creative and fun tune that quite naturally lends itself to equally rad visuals. Starsky cruises through his neighborhood on two wheels as he spits a whirlwind of bars and contemplates why and when he’s destined for space travel—and who’s coming with him. It’s certainly a trip, but psychedelics aren’t necessarily required (unless that’s your thing, of course).
