Above is the whiplash payoff that Earl Sweatshirt most likely had in mind when he released “Woah,” about a month ago: every head in sight thrashing up and down to the RZA-esque beat in anarchic release. Coming directly after the intensely somber “Chum,” it was a clever and cathartic pairing in its release, and the sequencing paid off live as well. Earl’s entire Coachella set was full of solid selections and progression, from the beginning, which was peppered with unreleased material, to the run of EarlWolf greatest hits that served as the penultimate movement. The closer by default was “Earl,” on which the 19-year-old MC sounded most vocally wicked. It was the culmination of a half-hour long upward surge in confidence, certainly aided by the company of his older brother/father figure Tyler. Earl still sounds like a kid when he’s live, lacking a veteran’s breath control or much willingness to be vulnerable, but he is improving, and the quality of his records is more than enough to back up his lack of experience and volume. Watch Earl’s set below, complete with DJ Flying Lotus, features from Tyler, The Creator, Domo Genesis, and Vince Staples, and Lucas Vercetti of OF Tape Vol. 2 cover fame as the world’s most tepid hype man. Enjoy.
