The Urban assembly at Hunter College held its yearly summit to uplift young men of color via The BlackManCan Institute. Carter held the honor of being the keynote speaker, engaging the young men by visiting each workshop and participating in the activity of each presenter. Soon after, he delivered a thought-provoking speech about his early life in high school, college (Ohio State) and the pros (Philadelphia Eagles), his recovery from drugs and his restorative journey back to the NFL (led by a Hall of Fame career with the Minnesota Vikings) and transitions to broadcasting (ESPN/FOX).

Before he gave the young men a riveting speech, Cris sat down and spoke to me about his stance on the NFL’s National Anthem Policy (“I stand with players, I kneel with the players, not in disrespect to the flag”) He also spoke on seeing what is happening in communities of color around the United States, even going so far to bring up the situation of excessive police force used with NBA player Sterling Brown. Cris went on to speak about why he thinks Colin Kaepernick could start over Blake Bortles and Josh McCown. Also included: his view of the new NFL catch rule, his relationships with Odell Beckham Jr., Antonio Brown, and Larry Fitzgerald, and why so many NFL stars go broke.
