With bangers like Ojulegba by Wizkid getting features from Drake, West African influence in hip-hop is on the rise and Chisom. is proof. The Detroit born rapper & producer, reps his Nigerian roots to the fullest.

His new single, “Africa Get Money,” is the ideal combination of soul sampling, a hallmark of boom bap and the swaying pulse of Afrobeat. In the single, he raps about his pride for his home country and the joys of being African. He even touches on some of the experiences of first generation immigrant kids–feeling disconnected because of not knowing your mother’s first language. The chorus provides a sort of anthem– highlighting countries like Zimbabwe and the DRC.

Chisom describes the song as “a call to celebration – an ode to prosperity and enjoyment, for anyone down to partake.” 

It is clear that Chisom draws inspiration from DJ Premier, The Neptunes and Kanye West in his production. What’s even more crystal, is that he’s steadfast in becoming one of the greats that his debut EP is entitled, The Jordan Year. As for his rapping, he says, “His cultural/musical influences [include] the verbal dexterity and swagger of the East Coast, the entrancing rhythms of Afrobeat, and the ultra cool, laid-back attitude of the West Coast.” So whether you’re in NYC, the DMV, or in Lagos, bust out your Kente loafers & jollof rice, this joint is sure to make you vibe.
