CBS Sports’ Greg Gumbel details to Brandon ‘Scoop B’ Robinson why he is his biggest critic. Press Play Below To Listen!

In the broadcasting game since 1973, CBS Sports’ Greg Gumbel is a household name and recognizable face during CBS Sports’ NFL broadcasts and during the NCAA March Madness basketball tournament.

With all of that experience many would think that he’s arrived and needs no critique. To the contrary, however, Gumbel says he has stuck to advice that he got years ago. “You know I think that from day one, I wish I could remember who told me, but they said: ‘go back and listen to yourself,’” Greg Gumbel told me while on Scoop B Radio. “And I still do it these days.”

Gumbel has seen tours of duty at Chicago’s WMAQ-TV, ESPN, the Madison Square Garden Network, CBS Sports, NBC Sports and, now, again at CBS.

“I’ll do a football game on Sunday and I will watch the game on Monday and there’s nothing in there that surprises me usually. But once in awhile, I’ll realize I’m using this crutch phrase or I’m leaning on this a little too much and I say ‘this’ and I’m unaware of it. But watching things like that can teach you about yourself and you can learn things that other people either don’t see or won’t tell you.”

Best advice through this whole critique process Mr. Gumbel? “With everything else you are your own harshest critic,” he said.

Gumbel says that this anecdote even translates to the football field. “It makes me think of Vince Wilfork,” he said. “He told me that when he played with the Patriots, his wife would sit in the stands and text him at halftime things like: ‘nice tackle baby.'”

Moral of the story? “There’s always somebody watching!”

Man, I remember the first time I caught on to Royce da’ 5’9″

It was my junior year of high school and I wasn’t allowed to watch music videos on MTV or BET.

So, what’s a guy to do? I did it anyway!

My mom would tell me she was going to check the bottom of the cable box and see if it was hot when she came home from work. So, naturally, I found the cheat code. I ran the cold water in the kitched sink until it got extra cold, then I got a sponge and cooled the cable box. By the time my mom came home, the cable box was cooled and was left the way it was when everyone left for school and work that morning.

Why are these details important, you ask? This set the stage for the formative years of my hearing Royce da 5’9’s music.

Well, I clearly remember coming home from school and checking out the music video for Rock With Me.

That song, Royce’s, also featured Eminem. I’d been sold on Eminem since he appeared on the 2000 MTV Video Music Awards and marched into the entrance of Radio City Music Hall with a ton of Eminem look-a-likes.

In turn, Eminem shook Carson Daly’s hand and left Fred Durst hanging while rapping to the hit, “The Real Slim Shady.”

Now that I’ve bored you, I say all of that to say that I thought Royce was talented in Rock With Me and the collaboration of he and Eminem meant the world to me back then.As talented a lyricist that Royce is, one would wonder who else he repects lyrically.

In a recent conversation on Scoop B Radio Overtime, Royce da’ 5’9 broke it down for me. “Biggie, Jay-Z, and Nas were in terms of albums were the first albums that I was able to appreciate from a technical, lyrical, standpoint,” Royce da’ 5’9″ told me on Scoop B Radio Overtime.

Royce da” 5’9 Checks In With Brandon ‘Scoop B’ Robinson On Scoop B Radio

“I’ve always been influenced by Redman, Ras Kass, the Helter Skelter album was a big album in my household. D.O.C. is a criminally slept on emcee out of the west coast. I think had he not had that accident he shoots to top three easily, Big L.”

Big L?? Yup Big L, Harlem’s finest! He’s very underrated. Royce thinks so too. “Criminally underrated,” Royce da’ 5’9 said.

“I think Big L was better than Jay-Z at that time, just in my opinion. Let me know if y’all disagree because we can argue.”

Nope, we’re saying nothing.

The most exciting time of the year is finally here: the 2017 NCAA Tournament. Whether your favorite team has made it through selection Sunday or not, the NCAA basketball playoff season is like Christmas morning for basketball fans. And hey, if you’re on the east coast, it may remind you of Christmas with the nor’easter that swept through the northeast corridor.

CBS Sports’ Clark Kellogg entered the Scoop B Radio Overtime gates and shared what he’s looking forward to the most during this year’s tournament.

Apparently, it’s the underdogs: “I love watching these teams that people don’t tend to watch during the regular season,” Kellogg told me on the Scoop B Radio Podcast. Kellogg likes teams with guts like Florida Gulf Coast, East Tennessee State and UNC-Wilmington and thinks that this year like every other year will be quite a show. “I like to find those teams that have the chance to advance in the tournament,” said Kellogg.

“Well have drama, we’ll have buzzer beaters, we’ll have close games, he said.

Breaking stories, podcasts and relationships are all par for the course in being a great journalist. I represented myself and RESPECT Magazine last week in a sit down interview with Selena Hill and Black Enterprise Magazine.

Although I began my career at 12 years old, hosting Nets Slammin’ Planet, the Nets’ official kids radio show with Albert King, Lynn Wilson and Nets play-by-play guy, Chris Carrino, my footing in journalism out of school was not strictly in sports. I wrote about lifestyle stuff too! The Unibat portable battery charger, PlayStation 4, XBOX One, NBA 2K releases, as well as celebrity news was on my playte!

These were great things.

While doing that, I was also able to build solid relationships with athletes and freelancing at places like the Brooklyn Courier, Queens Times Ledger, SLAM Magazine and MaxPreps. That’s where writing about guys like the Cleveland Cavaliers’ Kyrie Irving and University of Michigan football standout Jabrill Peppers came in handy. I’d also write about Thing The Unibat, PlayStation 4, XBOX One, NBA 2K releases, as well as celebrity news.

During my interview on Black Enterprise’s #AskBE Facebook Live chat with Selena Hill, I discussed how it as my time as a staff writer for three years at The Source Magazine, that allowed me to foster strong relationships with A-listers like Shaquille O’Neal, Rihanna, Carmelo Anthony and Charles Barkley and catapult that to the next stage.

I also shared that being front and center questioning NBA commissioner Adam Silver at his press conference when the league banned former Los Angeles Clippers owner Donald Sterling from owning the team was a huge break in my career.

After The Source, I seamlessly transitioned as on-air talent at CBS Radio as host of the top rated podcast, Brown & Scoop. The show featured notable talent, like DJ Khaled, Mark Cuban, Jesse Ventura, David Banner and President Donald Trump’s Director of Urban Development, Dr. Ben Carson. Interviews from Brown & Scoop were featured on TMZ, ESPN, Complex, Sporting News, CNN, Politico, The Hill and more.

Additionally, I talked about the importance of professionals having a strong social media presence. The biggest piece that I shared with Hill was: “The major key is that you develop those relationships [and] make yourself memorable.”

After finishing the 2015-16 season at 32-50 and 13th place in the NBA’s Eastern Conference, the New York Knicks had to make some upgrades during the offseason.

The team hired head coach Jeff Hornacek, acquire the rights to Derrick Rose in a trade with the Chicago Bulls and signed free agents Joakim Noah, Brandon Jennings and Courtney Lee.

DJ Clue a long time dj on New York’s Power 105 has been a long suffering Knicks fan and he’s happy that key names at key positions are in place. “Any move is a good move because we were struggling,” DJ Clue told me. “I think some good trades and some good pickups, I’m not mad at all. They’re just missing a solid free throw shooters.”

Since the Knicks made the blockbuster trade with the Denver Nuggets that brought Carmelo Anthony to New York in 2011, Anthony has played under four head coaches. Hornacek makes it his fifth.

Anthony has always been an efficient scorer. Last season, basketball purists marveled at his ability to play a team concept. In 72 games last season Anthony had a productive 22 points, 7 rebounds and 4 assists and had a successful gold medal run with USA basketball this summer. “I’ll be entering, what…my 14th season,” Anthony told me earlier this summer.

“I have to continue to lead this team. We’re professionals and we’ve certainly improved from last season.”

HoopsHype has the Knicks pegged at third in the NBA’s Atlantic Division and seventh in the Eastern Conference.Actor, podcast host and die-hard Knicks fan Michael Rapaport sees it a little different. “I’m looking for a four seed in the East,” Rapaport told me.

Rapaport Talks Knicks on ESPN’s The Jump

“I think the Knicks’ moves were good. I expect them to make the playoffs. You got a lot of pieces. The ‘umph’ is the health factor, not just with Rose, not just with Noah, you know Brandon Jennings; I love him. So hopefully, if they’re all healthy and their hands are on deck for at least 65 games and all of those guys are playing, we’ll definitely make the playoffs.”

Miami bred lyricist Epidemic is up at em with his newest installment, titled, “Tried To Tell ‘Em.” The track demonstrates his ability to stay ready and boasts fellow Floridan, native Zoey Dollaz. The track also features Gunplay.

The three delved into their past and discuss the good, bad and the ugly in achieving their goals. It’s a good listen.
