Last month, Howard University did the impossible by defeating the UNLV Rebels 43-40.

Caylin Newton, younger brother of Carolina Panthers quarterback, Cam Newton led the charge for the Bison by throwing for 140 yards and a touchdown under center.

The irony of Howard beating UNLV in Las Vegas is comical, if you ask me.

Deemed as the the biggest upset in college football history based on the betting line. According to various betting services, placing a $100 bet on Howard University beating UNLV would have made the winner $55,000 more richer.

That’s a year’s worth of college loan repayment right there!

“What happened in Vegas definitely didn’t stay in Vegas,” Howard University head football coach Mike London told me on Scoop B Radio. “To really make some of the national attention, it is great for the school, it is good for the university and it is good for all Howard Alumni and stakeholders.”

Added Coach London:

“We want to improve as a football team to continue and get back on that winning ledger again,” but it was a great event it was a great opportunity to have our guys travel out there and experience that whole experience there so now that we are getting the season started we are excited that they are coming to Howard this time.”

 

Howard was a 45 point road underdog against UNLV. According to coach London, the team’s motivation was high going in. “Well you know we came here with a new culture and new understanding on how we want to operate the program,” he said.

“So when you have that kind of by in and it tends to show the kids that things are possible. We adopted the phrase mission possible and that is on the field and off the field and in the classroom. All those things that we took that to Las Vegas with us and we experienced a great victory.”

At 2-3, Howard is currently 5th in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference. They’ll play Delaware State this weekend in Delaware. They’re looking to kick into high gear.

Howard beating UNLV was a big deal. Usually bigger schools gloss over a smaller school coming in. It makes you wonder if that victory will make huge schools think twice. “I have been on both sides of it,” said London. Whether it is at Howard or UNLV or at your high school you play the field is 100 yards so all that matters is what happens between the white lines.”

He added:

“I think you know a lot of it has to do with mindset. You get FDS schools and you maybe play a lower division and it is human nature is what you make of it sometimes and you  undervalue, you underestimate who you get ready to play against. On the other hand, guys that get a chance to go play an upper level school you know it is a great opportunity because they might get to be seen by a school that they are going to get recruited by an SDS school or an opportunity to play and show what they can do and that is something that they covet as well. So we just happened to hit the right moment at the right time and our guys were anxious and willing to play and lived with the mindset that when we travel to go play a game we travel to go win a game in all games in not just because it’s an FDS school. That was a mind set that we created. We are continuing  to strive to have that no matter it be home or away.”

Howard University football coach Mike London Checked In With Brandon ‘Scoop B’ Robinson and discussed a ton of topics on Scoop B Radio, including Bison quarterback, Caylin Newton, brother of Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton. Press play below to listen in!

In his senior season at Atlanta, Georgia’s Grady High School, Caylin Newton threw for 3,322 yards with 33 touchdowns and eight interceptions and ran for 1,036 yards on 92 carries with 13 touchdowns.

Unfortunately he got no serious Division 1 offers. So he committed to Howard University.

Last month, Howard University did the impossible by defeating the UNLV Rebels 43-40.

Newton led the charge under center for the Bison by throwing for 140 yards and a touchdown. Every news outlet tied Newton to his brother, Carolina Panthers QB, Cam Newton.

After Howard’s upset over UNLV, Howard University football coach Mike London says that all eyes have been on the school and the quarterback. But you’ll never guess what the most asked question of the younger Newton happens to be. What’s Caylin Newton really like and does he really like the gumby style haircut,” Mike London told me on today’s episode of the Scoop B Radio Podcast.

So how does he respond?

“I said: ‘Caylin Newton is his only person.’ So he has a brother that supports him, that wants him to develop to be the best quarterback, person, teammate that he can be. And [if] he wants to rock the gumby haircut, that is on him. I will support that. You have to find a barber that can cut it that way. But he is a great young man, very humble we are going to need him to play his best football game this weekend and prepare for and he will, he always does. I just think he is special.”

At 5-foot-11, 185-pounds, Caylin is much shorter than his brother, but he has balanced stats like his brother.

In 5 games this season, he’s thrown for 1033 yards, thrown 5 touchdown passes and completed 60 passes on 120 attempts. On his feet, Newton ran for 7 touchdowns and has tallied 398 rushing yards.

Here’s two million dollar questions: How are they similar? How are they different?

“Well I can tell a difference, Cam is 6’5 and Caylin is about 5’10 ½  on a good day if he is standing on stilts,” said Mike London. “But they are similar in that they are athletic guys that can make a five yard scramble and turn it into a fifty-five yard scramble. I have seen that happen in a game and in practice. Cam has a strong arm because of what he has accomplished and where he has been over the years.”

Added Coach London:

“Now there is a will that the both of them have a will to compete; that I see being very similar. Obviously from the physical differences, size-wise and things of that nature that is obvious to see that. But I think when he talks to people and calls home, [he] is calling and getting some pretty good advice from brother or from dad, whoever it might be in his circle  of influence and his circle of friends. I look forward to him in a proven quarterback, we are going to need for him to improve as a quarterback and if he does that then we will have opportunities to win more games and starting with this one coming up this week.”

Opening day for the NFL took place on September 8th with a super bowl rematch between the defending champions the Denver Broncos and the Carolina Panthers.  Through a hard fought battle, the Broncos won 21-20 when Graham Gano missed a 50 yard field goal for the Panthers.  Even though the game was filled with exciting plays and touchdowns, they were not the paramount of attention for this game.  The physical play of the Denver Broncos lead to multiple hard collisions to the quarterback for the Panthers, Cam Newton.  

Newton was subject to multiple hits to the head and aggressive tackles that looked to do more than just stop the play.  With this physical play, none of them resulted in yardage for the Panthers offense.  In other words, the Broncos defense were hitting Newton and were not subject to penalization.  Greg Olsen stated in the post game interview, “Treat him like a quarterback.  I know he is the biggest guy on the the field, but he is still a QB.”  He is calling out the officials stating that they have done Cam Newton injustice by not calling these hits.  The officials were not treating him like the ordinary quarterback and did not protect him with flags and whistles.    

Even though the hard tackles were occurring constantly in the game, the team did not blame their lost on the physical play.  Cam Newton stated: “We didn’t lose the game of that (hard tackles).  I know that for a fact.” However, he also knows that the officials should be calling these fouls.  He also stated, “I really like the officiating crew.  It wasn’t something I know they did intentionally, but it’s not fun getting hit in the head.”  Cam Newton has every right to be upset.  The officials are suppose to protect the quarterback to a certain degree and failed to do so.  Because of this, the Panthers could have possibly lost their star due to an injury.

NFL’s bad boy, Cam Newton is showing a different side by helping kids meet their goal in his new show on Nickelodeon. When hearing of the show, one couldn’t help but ponder what exactly the show would be about. But after watching the trailer it is something that warms the heart immediately. The show will allow a kid every episode to meet their goals as Newton matches them up with a pro mentor. See the trailer below! The show, All in with Cam Newton is set to premiere June 3rd on Nickelodeon and comes on every Friday at 8pm. Not too late for the kiddos.

After Newton’s season it is hard to tell if this is something genuine or something to raise his standings in the homes across America. One would hope it isn’t purely just the latter. This could be a great opportunity for the the Panther to show his true colors, character, and a softer side to the public. Even though America gives him such a bad name based on his activity on the field, I think deep down they want to get to know him and see how he acts off the field. The trailer does a great job at showing a different side that America has never seen. And yes, that gorgeous smile is omnipresent throughout it as well– ladies know!

Now that Newton is a father himself to his son, Chosen Newton, maybe this created a change in him.  He might want to get rid of his bad boy image and channel his inner father figure role. Whether it’s for his kid, himself, or to clean up his image, it looks like the show will be a hit considering the influence the NFL has on kids already. Bring in an MVP with a good personality and one can only imagine what the ratings will sky rocket too (or hope to).
