New Video: Dopehead – “Dat Choppa”

It’s hard to imagine anyone being even remotely as energetic and exuberant than Danny Brown, but his fellow Bruiser Brigadier Dopehead is living proof. In fact, he might be even more energized than Danny. Though the video for “Dat Choppa” is pretty standard visually, Dopehead is endlessly compelling, transforming stairways, corner stores and rooftops into scenes of maximum fun. But he’s not working alone. Resident Bruiser Brigade producer SKYWLKR also puts in work, combining relentless, chaotic synths with patient bass and well-timed snares. The result is both breathless and intimidating, even with Dopehead‘s funny lines and delivery.

Dopehead‘s new album as a whole is worth a listen. He and Danny Brown have similar affects, but they’re cousins and they’ve been rapping together for over a decade, so there’s no imitation or mimicry, just some natural slight overlap. Still, Dopehead has a mercilessness that you’re not going to find in a Danny Brown song. Even the way he shouts “Bruiser!” in his ad-libs has a brutality to it that’s totally his own. Video: Danny Brown Freestyles on Sway in the Morning

Following protocol during his visit to Sway in the Morning, Bruiser Brigadier Danny Brown didn’t leave the building without dropping a freestyle. It’s not an impromptu freestyle, and Danny [wisely?] avoids the “5 Fingers of Death,” but he rides the beat well and delivers some tightly-crafted verses with crisp clarity and confidence. You’ve got to appreciate that, especially since that voice – you know the one – is incredibly difficult to maintain. Watch below. Old is out on September 30.

New Music: Danny Brown – “Kush Coma”

The hyper-photogenic, zany, stoned black sheep of the new school, Danny Brown, has dropped a new track. “Kush Coma,” the first single off the Detroit rapper’s upcoming LP Old, is hardly as subdued as the title suggests. Skywlkr‘s tense synths evoke the 90 MPH rise into a meteor shower mentioned in the opening bars. The Bruiser Brigade‘s general brings a machine gun flow, yapping on all topics narcotic. The chorus sounds like a cheery robot surprised at how high he’s just gotten, which breaks the manic verses up nicely. The final version of the track is rumored to feature Brown’s homie A$AP Rocky. Flacko‘s slippery flows will surely bring “Kush Coma” closer to the comatose end of things, rather than where it’s at right now: “doin’ a hundred on a Harley.” Swerve on, Danny.

Bruiser Brigade Freestyle at Brooklyn Boxing Gym

The whole Bruiser Brigade showed love to Brooklyn with a short interview and freestyle at the historical Gleason’s Gym in DUMBO. After messing around on the treadmills, Danny Brown and his team chat about his latest “maxi single”, the forthcoming album and their relationship with producer Skywlkr. The freestyle set comes from Pitchfork media’s “Selector” video series Two Beats, One Rhyme, which features emcees choosing between two beats to spit on.

DANNY BROWN’S BRUISER BRIGADE DROPS FREE EP

“Bruiser be the clique I claim,” declares Danny Brown on EP-opener “Errthang.” The toothless Detroit wordsmith has returned, and he’s brought some of his Bruiser Brigade with him for the ride.

The four song EP features aforementioned track “Errthang” and “Jooky,” plus remixes from Lockah and Ryan Hemsworth. In-house producer/DJ madman Skywlkr provides the EP’s gritty sound, while Brown and Dopehead attack with furious rhymes.

Video: Danny Brown – “Gypped by a Crackhead”

Danny Brown’s critically acclaimed release XXX is an exuberant album, but it has some dark moments. Even when Brown was able to put a bizarre twist on situations like stealing copper from elementary schools and getting utterly wasted via PBR, the bleak reality of Detroit always loomed in the background. That dim background doesn’t disappear in this video. The cartoonish setup is entertaining, but at the end, it’s still pretty melancholy. It’s up for debate whether the animators at Pitchfork aimed to maintain that melancholy aura, but it’s there nonetheless.
