Maryland born, New York rapper and producer Marques Martin continues to blend genres on his latest track “Dinner Date” featuring fellow Maryland rapper and artist KAMAUU and Brandon Black (formerly No Wyld).
Succeeding the release of his debut singles “About 2 Die” and “Kissing Pavements”, his third release touches on the realities of American life and issues he regularly faces. “Dinner Date” offers a fresh, experimental sound with a euphoric, gospel feel to its production. Bringing in notable NYC-based, Japanese keyboardist Big Yuki (Robert Glasper, ATCQ, J Cole), and Maryland cultural icon KAMAUU and No Wyld’s Brandon Black points also to the increasing calibre of his artistic vision.

The musical approach that Marques Martin brings, akin to KiD CuDi, does not centralise around girls, money and cars. Through his unique production and deeply personal lyrics, the breakthrough rapper differs from many young, black, male artists. Expressing vulnerability through his lyricism, Marques’ hunger for success and his undeniable musical ability has been deemed the experimental rapper as a “genuine creative with a unique and soulful sound.”

Taking inspiration from the likes of Outkast, St Vincent and The Beatles – Marques’ broad range of influences has earned him the support of BBC Radio 1’s Annie Mac and DJ Target as well as US side with Beats 1’s Ebro. With only three tracks released, it’s clear that with the scope and sophistication of Marques’ music, it feels like just a question of time for an artist that’s seeming like one of the finds of the year.
