To celebrate the release of the first album in their live recordings series, ILL-US-TRAIT, Seattle duo, Black Stax share a hypnotic and stirring rendition of their crowd favorite, “Unexpected Shots.”

The track starts with swirls and hums courtesy of producer, DJ Shingi, along with several collaborators (Baba Ade, DJ I’m On, and eBellz), who paint a colorful canvas for Black Stax’s Jace ECAj (emcee) and Felicia Loud (vocalist). Together, the two have carved out a niche as one of the Northwest’s finest acts while they push the boundaries of what’s expected from Hip-Hop.

And you couldn’t find a better example than “Unexpected Shots,” a psychedelic cut that, quite fittingly, is ideal for a live setting. That’s in part because of the call-and-response second half led by ECAj and Loud, who playfully interact with the audience as they move through the chorus. But it’s also because of ECAj’s stellar display on the mic as he spits lines like, “Never claimed to be holy or trophy, for display” and “I make a move, it’s your move” with Loud on the hook.
