Though Channel Orange and that famous tumblr post revealed more about Frank Ocean than anyone had previously suspected, the man at the center of it all is still somewhat of an enigma. The Guardian recently caught up with Frank and got him to be frank about how he feels in the aftermath of the album’s release.

The interview contains many gems, but this is the standout quote:

Asked why he didn’t fall back on the generic “you”, he shrugs: “When you write a song like Forrest Gump, the subject can’t be androgynous. It requires an unnecessary amount of effort. I don’t fear anybody … “

Rumors started to swirl about Frank Ocean’s sexuality last month after a listening session for his Channel Orange album. Several songs on the album, as noted by those in attendance, seemed to be about two men in love. Now, Ocean has taken to Tumblr to address the situation.

Ocean describes meeting and falling in love with a boy when he was 19. “By the time I realized I was in love, it was malignant,” he says. “It was hopeless. There was no escaping, no negotiating with the feeling. No choice. It was my first love, it changed my life.”

He goes on to note that, though he expressed his love to this man, the feelings were not reciprocated. “He wouldn’t tell me the truth about his feelings for me for another 3 years,” writes Ocean. “I kept up a peculiar friendship with him because I couldn’t imagine keeping up my life without him.”
