DJ Khaled, Big Sean, Betty Wright, and Kendrick Lamar collaborated to mesh together a feel good, introspective, political anthem.

“Holy Key” touches upon sociopolitical, religious, and internal issues that plague our society, as well as the artists themselves. Big Sean makes a reference to the rampant police shootings that have been littering the news on a seemingly endless basis (Father help us, police doing target practice with real bodies/Mommas in the streets, crying, standing over a still body), and Betty Wright subsequently delivers an uplifting chorus, whose main message is about the overcoming of difficulties around you and prospering anyway.

The Compton rapper veers away from the jazz and funk instrumentals he’s proven to be so proficient in and dips in a more accessible and poppy sound. The subject matter, however, stays on the deeper end.

“I ain’t scared of losses no more, I see life in that/I don’t resonate with the concept of love and hate,” as well as lines like “Brand endorsement joining forces with sorcerers signing me/Law enforcement their forces, they torture us with violence B” are examples of Kendrick’s thoughts on police brutality, spirituality, and superficial sources of happiness- all of which he delves into more in his verse.
