Make no mistake: whatever team is now handling the BET Awards have definitely stepped things up from over the past <del datetime="2019-06-24T22:26:35+00:00">few</del> several years. This go ’round, the big event was hosted by Regina Bell, who decided to give the crowd a taste of Washington, D.C. (her hometown) throughout (including a really dope opener, featuring Go-Go legends E.U.). Added to that, Cardi B, DaBaby, Lil Baby, H.E.R., Lizzo, Lil Nas X, Mary J. Blige (who performed for her own Lifetime Achievement Award) and more gave quality performances on stage, while notable winners speeches were peppered throughout. Finally, BET paid Nipsey Hussle a worthy tribute featuring some of his past collaborators and peers.

A petition to have Jesse Williams fired from the hit show, Grey’s Anatomy was launched on Change.com by user, Erin Smith, after the actors impassioned speech about racial inequality while receiving the Humanitarian Award at the BET Awards on June 26th. The petition, which started on July 1st has already collected a large number of signatures and accuses him of making a racist and hateful speech.

“Jesse Williams spewed a racist, hate speech against law enforcement and white people at the BET awards, If this was a white person making the same speech about an African-American, they would have been fired and globally chastised, as they should be, but there has been no consequences to Williams’ actions.” Ms. Smith wrote in the petition.

The petition also called for Shonda Rhimes, the show’s creator, head writer, executive producer, and showrunner to remove the actor from the show. To which she responded on a twitter post on Tuesday stating

Um, people? Boo don’t need a petition. #shondalandrules

— shonda rhimes (@shondarhimes) July 5, 2016

Smith, angered by Rhimes twitter response, later included in her demands:

“Unfortunately, a necessary escalation is warranted. Please sign the petition to fire Jesse Williams from Grey’s Anatomy AND boycott the entire ABC Network. Don’t forget to unlike all ABC programs/shows on Facebook pages, unfollow all on Twitter and separate from all social media that has anything to do with ABC, their shows, news, etc.”

Despite the efforts of many petitioners to have Jessie Williams fired from the show, many others have come to his defense such as Norman Lear, Executive Producer to the upcoming Epix documentary series “America Divided,” which takes a look at the inequality America faces today.

“I’ve seen and attended a ton of awards shows in my time, and no one has ever put his soul and his a** on the line so fully and so truthfully as Jesse Williams did.” Lear told IndieWire in a statement.

It seems the Freebandz representative is not all about the hype, and is quite selective when it comes down to performances.

Of course, we are referring to Future’s absence from the BET Awards stage, which left the streets in wonder, or better yet, rather confused.

As opposed to laying low on the situation, the “News or Somthn” emcee, made it clear through a publicized announcement, that legit reasons rest behind his actions:

“You see what happened… BET, they had a nigga about to perform up there or whatever, but under the circumstances of me performing. I can’t fuck with that; you know what I’m saying, because they tried to get a nigga to do some off-brand corny shit.”

It seems Future certainly has standards set, as he continues to wrap up his thoughts in a single sentence:

“I’m not about to sell my soul for no publicity stunts.”

In case you missed it, Bad Boy Entertainment recently celebrated 20 years of being one of the best labels the world has seen. At this year’s BET Awards, the world got to witness a ten minute tribute to Bad Boy where Sean “Diddy” Combs brought some of the labels best acts from Mase to 112 to Faith Evans to the Notorious Queen Bee herself, Lil Kim. While the tribute focused on the classics from Bad Boy’s reign in the 90s, we got to see some of Bad Boy’s latest success with French Montana coming out to perform his feature from the “Hot Boy (Remix)”. Now it wouldn’t be a Bad Boy tribute without paying homage to the Notorious B.I.G so the tribute took the time to give props to probably the most successful artist from Bad Boy, besides Diddy himself. Noticeably missing from the tribute were former Bad Boy artists Carl Thomas, Total and Lil Cease. However, this was one of the best moments of the night as proven by the amount of people in the audience who was on their feet and hitting the Diddy bop. Hopefully this performance will lead to a 20 year anniversary album!

Missed the moment? Watch it here

It looks like the BET Awards was utilized as a springboard to release new material for a couple of artists this year. Among Big Sean and Meek Mill, another artist that can be added onto that list is international artist Rihanna. Previewing a minute of her upcoming video for “Bitch Better Have My Money,” which drops Thursday 7/2, Riri made sure the focus was on her leading up to the teaser even from the comfort of her front-row chair.
