The Baz Luhrmann directed series,“The Get Down,” just released a funk-fueled trailer and ode to the Bronx. Set in the 70’s, this riotous clip is an explosion of music, black culture, and epic storytelling.

The trailer sets the scene for the Netflix original and musical drama. The voice-over declares:

“The pale faced media tells us we’re all going to hell, but maybe we just the first ones to light the fire.”

This theme from the 70’s  is more relevant in 2016 than we could have imagined. Sadly, it looks like we’re still dealing with the same problems that haunted us 40 years ago. “The Get Down” will hopefully spark some change by reiterating the past.

“What’s the get down?” yells one character, to which another character shouts back, “You don’t know what the f**king get down is?”

Baz Luhramnn is known for his notoriously expensive and over-the-top crowd scenes. After directing “Romeo + Juliet,” “Moulin Rouge” and “The Great Gatsby,” Luhrmann has proved he knows just how to portray a party. However, “The Get Down” covers one thing that has been lacking from Luhrmann’s films: a story of black culture, and the streets.

Baz Luhrmann will take on the party scenes of the 70’s with dj’s spinning, disco balls sparkling, and the soul train.

The trailer takes us through a sped-up story of young black kids trying to make it out of the Bronx. With nothing but music and young love to help them soar, things are going to heat up.

Following their “grand master” (Grandmaster Flash) the group of kids, or young grasshoppers, are eager to learn the DJ trade. But they have to remember, “In order to fly a DJ must trust his wings.”

The cast is dripping with talent. Giancarlo Esposito makes an appearance in the trailer, as a figure of authority (perhaps a parent), spouting “the glory of God.” Esposito played one of the most understated villains on television in his sizzling role as the clean-cut drug lord, Gustavo Fring, in “Breaking Bad.” Jaden Smith will also appear, bringing his effortlessly cool persona to the show, and embodying the 70’s.

“The Get Down” comes to Netflix on August 12th. Get Down on it.
