Let’s face it. Music this year was great at times, but very stale at others–and even then, the great music hasn’t necessarily been timeless for the most part.

Then I came across California to Las Vegas transfer, Arty Basqiyah and his debut, Young Flower Pot.

While Arty has been on the scene for a minute now, he’s sort of played the background role, providing vocals, production and all sorts of other help to musicians like Asaiah Ziv and more, Young Flower Pot is without a doubt his introduction to the world. Clocking in at 16 tracks, the album looks congested at first glance when grading it by today’s standards. That couldn’t be further from the truth, though, as not one of the 16 would I consider a skip. Playing the project from start to finish, I let it ride front-to-back three whole times before even realizing which ones were my favorite.

I had a conversation with somebody about this album and realized that the best quality about it was that there wasn’t a medley of songs that I could choose as a standout as the whole project seamlessly pieced together like a storybook. Imagine having to choose the best scenes from your favorite movie and you can only watch those, that’s what choosing the standouts on this project would feel like.

But if we must split hairs, the best tracks on this album are, “Water,” a silky smooth song that showcases Arty’s uniquely impressive singing voice, “Twenty Four,” the best produced and most well put together track on this project and “The Firmanent,” the track that best showcases Arty as a pure lyricist. Again, that’s splitting hairs. Every single song on Young Flower Pot is a gem and I’m forever grateful that Arty gave us 16 instead of 4 different 4-song-EPs that are drawn out over 2 years like everybody else is doing. Oh yeah, did I also mention he produced every song on the project himself?
