Earlier this month, Jay Park released a Hoodboi remix with 88rising of “All I Wanna Do,” a song he released in March of this year. The remix is a different take of the original song, which emphasizes its R&B qualities.

The song begins with mellow R&B vibes, jumping right into the first verse of the song, whereas in the original, the song begins with the hook. This alteration of the structure of the song allows for the remix to leave a stronger impact, as it jumps right into the middle of the action. It also constructs a rushed tempo that continues throughout the song (besides the first chorus). The chorus is remade well in the remix, as the instrumental starts out with slower vibes and only snaps, but then it progresses with an increased tempo and heavier percussion as the chorus is ending. This detail of the chorus is to be appreciated, as there are only snaps in the background along with Jay Park’s vocals, which creates an acapella effect – releasing a clear and crisp sound.

Another small detail I liked from the remix was when Jay Park sings “I don’t care” and in the remix version, there’s an echo of “care” with a high-pitched voice. Despite it being a trivial part of the song, it was enjoyable. One more part of the song that was different from the original that was also catchy was when Jay Park sings, “And if you don’t know me, then you better stay the f*ck out of my section/ Unless you Tinashe.” In the original there is an “Agh!” in the background after this line, but in the remix, it is taken out, and instead, there is a slight distortion of the voice during “unless” and “Tinashe.” These small changes are noticeable and note-worthy as they offer a distinct feel from the original.

Overall, the remix is just as good as a jam to listen to as the original. However, I was disappointed at one point in the remix, where there seemed to be a climax building up, as the instrumental increased in speed and intensified with faster percussion, and there was a sound of a gun being released, but afterwards, the climax was it was trying to attain was rather weak. I expected the instrumental to go even more hardcore, but it didn’t. It might have been better without the intense build-up it created. Instead, there were only clear and consistent percussion sounds that didn’t match up to the climax that had been developing.

The song ends with piano sounds and snaps, a soft R&B melody, a bit similar to the beginning of the song. The melody descends, creating closure for the remix, and then abruptly ends. The remix is shorter than the original song but this does not decrease the quality of the original, but rather gives a different spin to the song.

Both the remix and original are both great songs to jam to this hot summer, especially with the bass turned up, so make sure to give them both a listen.

Jay Park and Ugly Duck returned earlier last week with a new single “Ain’t No Party Like an AOMG Party” or in Korean, “우리가 빠지면 Party가 아니지,” one of the tracks off their new EP Scene Stealers. Their last official release together was “몸매(Mommae)” which means ‘body’ in English, from Jay Park’s studio album ₩orld ₩ide. The English song title is actually a little different from the Korean song title. Literally, the song title means, ‘Without us, it ain’t a party’ or ‘It ain’t a party, if we [AOMG] ain’t there.’

The song starts out with a slow and seemingly gentle rhythmic piano-like beat in the beginning, but then becomes hardcore with its heavy bass and percussion sounds. Surprisingly, this song actually reminds you of “Mommae,” even though the producers are different. “Mommae” was produced by famous producer, also part of the AOMG label, Gray. On the other hand, this song is produced by Prima Vista, Yultron, and Cha Cha Malone (another producer from AOMG). Moreover, Jay Park references “Mommae” by singing the same lines:

‘They ain’t f**kin’ with us, no, they ain’t f**kin’ with us.’

Showing creativity, he’s able to fit lyrics from one of his previous songs into his new single, and still make it sound fresh. However, despite the many similarities between the new song and Jay Park’s “Mommae” released earlier last year, can be listened to without getting bored. And for this song, it was only released last week, and we’re slowly starting to feel ambivalent about it. “Mommae” has a stronger and more addictive hook while the hook in this song is just this line “It ain’t a party if we aren’t there” (in Korean) repeated over and over.

In the song, Jay mentions his connection from Seattle to Seoul, highlighting his Korean-American heritage, which he does in many of his songs, for example – “All I Want to Do,” “On It,” and even has a song called “Seattle 2 Soul.” He also cleverly in the lyrics gives a shout out to the producers Prima Vista, Yultron, Cha Cha Malone. For Ugly Duck’s part, rap is suited well with the song and he makes many references. One of them is ‘Law of the Jungle’ which is a reference to a South Korean variety show as well as referring to the animal-like and crazy party that goes down with Jay Park and AOMG.

Visually, this music video is explosive – there is a strong contrast between the different sets. For example, there is fire and cards that are burning in one set, there are dark tunnels and flashlights in another, there is a club-like hazy purple smog set, and a circus tent background as well. This music video was skilfully produced by Tiger Cave, as the constant shifting between sets match with the upbeat and the krump-like instrumental. My favorite set would the dark background, with flashing lights because there, Ugly Duck and Jay Park are wearing elaborate body and face paint. It reminds me of Halloween but with swag. Also, even though Jay Park has a skull painted on one-half of his face, instead of being frightening, he looks charismatic and intimidating.

In the music video, the snippets of choreography danced by Jay Park, and the choreography by the female dance crew, Purplow are impressive. Jay Park is a multi-talented man – he is good at singing, rapping and dancing as well. I wish there was a choreography version of the song, because I would love to see the whole dance that Jay Park and the crew, Prepix performs. But from the short and intermittent snippets seen, the dance moves are powerful and on-point. Purplow’s dance is sexy and matches the song well. There are also other various dancing crews, a b-boy group, krumping crew, and contortionist group.

Unfortunately, I think I like the music video more than I liked the song. In essence, this song is about Jay Park and Ugly Duck bragging about the importance of their presence or the presence of their crew and label AOMG at any party. It’s a straightforward song that doesn’t really have a profound meaning. That’s probably why it’s a good song to just jam to. Other things I appreciated about the visuals was the life-size metallic playing cards with their names that were burning in the background of one set. One of the coolest parts was when one of the dancers was doing tricks with burning poles and then tumbling in the air with them. I had to repeat that part a few times – it looked amazing. The visuals are just top-notch and creative, producing a cinematic quality to the music video. The video’s theme seems to combine a wild [human] circus and a crazy party at a club. Basically, the whole music video emphasizes that an AOMG party is where you want to be at – because there are pretty girls dancing sexily, live entertainment, tricks, dance competitions, body paint, fire, and flashing lights, etc.

Overall, the song lyrics are nothing complex – the whole meaning of the song is captured in the title. However, the hardcore instrumental and well-designed aesthetics of this music video make it a perfect song to enjoy visually as well as  turn up to for the summer.

The music video currently has over 800,000 views. It is also available for download worldwide on iTunes.

Yesterday, Jay Park released the audio for “I Don’t Disappoint” produced by label-mate Cha Cha Malone. A few days ago, he also dropped “우리가 빠지면 Party가 아니지” or in English “Ain’t No Party like an AOMG Party” with Ugly Duck, a rapper from his label, along with other jams part of his most recent EP Scene Stealers.

This song may possibly be a preview for another upcoming solo album, as he writes “EVERYTHING YOU WANTED EP COMING SOON” in the description for this audio. His previous studio album ₩orld ₩ide was released November last year, that featured eighteen original tracks. This song may be also a gift to his fans, as on Twitter, he tweeted, “Rt if u want me and cha cha to drop another english song tonight.” As the retweets reached more than five thousand, he released this song through his official SoundCloud and YouTube channels.

Jay Park being both a singer and rapper, tends to do R&B songs as well as more rap-oriented songs. This is one of his more R&B songs, where he does a combination of rapping and singing. Moreover, as he is a Korean-American, he does both songs that are completely in English or mainly in Korean (with some English here and there) and this is another one of his English songs. This song is similar to his earlier release from March 2016 “All I Wanna Do” that is produced by Cha Cha Malone as well. In this song,  he sings the chorus and raps on the verses. These two singles may be connected to his unreleased EP because for this audio, in the description he also writes, “’EVERYTHING YOU WANT’ EP/ *Coming Soon*” However, compared to “All I Wanna Do” his more recent single has a stronger vibe for making body-rolls.

The song begins with mellow echoes of Jay Park’s vocals in the background that repeats the refrain “I don’t disappoint, girl you notice it” and then producer Cha Cha Malone’s drop “I need a Cha Cha beat boy.” The song’s lyrics are explicit and honest, mentioning his need for a “sex trip” (reference to his 2015 song by the same name) and when he sings that he “can’t wait to f**k you right.” The lyrics are descriptive and detailed – for example, “Put on that see-through lingerie girl/ You can be my new cabaret girl.” In another line, he sings “it’s gonna be that bed, moving all across the room/ sexing nothing but the best girl, expect nothing less from me.” The title “I Don’t Disappoint” is witty as it refers to him not disappointing in bed but also not disappointing his fans. He promised his fans with more songs and he delivered. The instrumentals have powerful jazzy sounds that merge with more soft snaps, which work well together with the straightforward lyrics to create a sexy song.

Honestly, I am not really a fan of songs that just sing about sex but Jay Park’s vocals is so light and soothing making it very appealing to the ears. I like both his Korean and English releases, but his English songs tend to be more of the R&B style that I appreciate. I am also more of fan of his vocals than his rapping and in this single, there is a lot of singing. I don’t have a particular favorite part but the whole song is expressed through vivid story-telling that makes this song enjoyable.

Jay Park is a South Korean singer, rapper, dancer, entrepreneur and CEO of self-made independent label AOMG, that focuses mainly on Korean hip-hop and R&B music.
