From the underground railroad to the $20 dollar bill!

Progression or nah?  We’ve witnessed our first African American president, and now we’re witnessing an African American woman’s face on currency.  The Department of Treasury announced Wednesday afternoon that Harriet Tubman will replace that slaveholding, Andrew Jackson on the center of a new $20 dollar bill. Tubman’s face is the fitting replacement, being she lead hundreds of slaves to freedom.

Last year the U.S. Treasury surprised advocates who were pushing the issue to get a woman on the $20 bill, but announced that a woman would go on the redesigned $10 dollar bill instead.  Later that plan was met with criticism by those who pressed for Jackson to be replaced instead.  Back in July Treasury Secretary, Jack Lew told POLITICO, “There are a number of options of how we can resolve this. We’re not taking Alexander Hamilton off our currency.”

The long-awaited decision keeps Alexander Hamilton, one of the U.S. founding fathers, on the front of the $10 bill although suffragists who fought to give women the right to vote will be added to the back of the bill, the Treasury Department confirmed.

For those who thing that Andrew’s days on the $20 are numbered, think twice.  The new designs, from the Bureau of Engraving and Printing, would be made public in 2020 in time for the centennial of woman’s suffrage and the 19th Amendment to the Constitution. None of the bills, including a new $5 note, would reach circulation until the next decade.

It’s all about the Tubman baby…
