Above lies a recent single by Alex Da Kid titled “Go,” which sees the super-producer eschewing the usual Pop/commercial sensibilities for a more soulful, alcohol-infused collaboration with H.E.R. and Rapsody. Below, he ups the ante by adding UK’s Jorja Smith to the laid-back cut. Either way, the single is dope; very hopeful that Alex Da Kid will continue down this lane moving forward.

MGK’s first single off his upcoming album, Lace Up, would have never happened if the rapper had his way. Kelly told Wild 94.1 in Tampa that (Interscope head) Jimmy Iovine forced him into turning the song, originally recorded for a Verizon commercial, into a full-fledged single.

“I told my manager, ‘Don’t you dare make this into a song.’ Then we get a email, ‘Jimmy [Iovine] wants you to records a second verse to this and it has a hook on it.’ I don’t operate like that. I hate cookie cutter songs, like B.o.B. [and Hayley Williams] with ‘Airplanes,’ like [Eminem and Rihanna’s] ‘Love the Way You Lie.’ You weren’t there making the song with each other. I write all my hooks…I was offended… I never talked with Ester in my life. I never talked to Alex Da Kid, who makes cookie cutter records.”

The rapper goes on to explain that Alex da Kid asked him to re-record his verses, to which Kelly responded “how about you go and screw yourself.” The story does have a happy ending, seeing as how MGK eventually did take all of that anger and re-record his verses.
