The Source Magazine released their Power 30 issue this month. The nostalgic cover of the magazine featured a recreation of the December 1997 magazine that featured AZ, Nas and Foxy Brown of the legendary hip hop group the firm.

The Breakfast Club’s Charlamagne tha God, Angela Yee, and DJ Envy were on the recreation of the cover.

Entertainment attorney and The Source Magazine’s chairman, L. Londell McMillan dropped by The Breakfast Club to discuss The Power 30 issue.

While on the show, McMillan was peppered with questions from Charlamagne tha God about rapper, Jay-Z.

On his summer released 4:44, Jay-Z made direct references to McMillan, a former lawyer and confidant to late musical icon, Prince in his song, “Caught Their Eyes.”

Check it out at the 1:33 point

Caught Their Eyes (Ft. Frank Ocean) by Jay Z

From the album 4:44

On the track, the Brooklyn rapper says:

“I sat down with Prince, eye to eye/He told me his wishes before he died/Now, Londell McMillan, he must be color blind/They only see green from them purple eyes” and “This guy had ‘Slave’ on his face/You think he wanted the masters with his masters?/You greedy bastards sold tickets to walk through his house/I’m surprised you ain’t auction off the casket.”

McMillan seemed perplexed by the mention. “Again, you have to ask Hov because I was the guy who got ‘slave’ off his face,” McMillan told The Breakfast Club’s Charlamagne tha God.

Check out the interaction at the 14:00 mark in the video.

Added McMillan: “Prince hired me to get him out of the contract with Warner Bros. He called me the emancipator. I asked Prince when I first met him, ‘How do we get that slave off your face?’ Prince said, ‘You get me free, I’ll take slave off my face.’”

McMillan said that in a conversation with Prince he told him that freedom is not free.

“You think Harriet Tubman, Sojourner Truth, and Frederick Douglass just woke up one day and they want free? We’re going to have to fight for freedom. He said, ‘I’m ready to fight.’ We win and we were successful. I went from his lawyer to his manager to his partner.”

McMillan who manages half o the heirs of Prince’s estate defended his decision to sell tickets for fans to walk through Prince’s Paisley Park mansion “Anyone who knew Prince really knew that Prince left instructions to leave Paisley Park as a museum,” said McMillan.

“He left instructions to at least 20, 30 people, so that was a fact. In fact, he started writing out the plans for that.”

When asked on why Jay-Z chose to mention him in his song, McMillan says that he believes that Jay-Z was getting misinformation and information. “Jay usually doesn’t get press from things like that,” he said.

“What I’ve seen from my dealings with him. He’s usually a cool guy. I wanted to keep any beefs directly, but if he wants to talk about it privately or publicly. If you want to come up here and talk about it, we can have that conversation.”

DJ Clark Kent chats with Brandon ‘Scoop B’ Robinson about working with Jay-Z on Reasonable Doubt and his thoughts on the 4:44 album. Press Play below to listen to the episode of Scoop B Radio!

The notion of an almost 50 year old rapper still being consistent and relevant was foreign 20-years ago.

But we’ve evolved!

Unless you’ve lived under a rock, Jay-Z turned 48 today. He’s had a successful 2017. This year, he also put out a 4:44, an album that actually showed him to be vulnerable. He admitted being an accomplished business man, philanthropist, father and music icon and just like everyone else, he’s fallen short.

He admitted to cheating on his wife, Beyonce, he apologized for wasting women’s time before he decided to settle down, told us the story of O.J. and he gave us a bunch of game for $9.99 at a time where he once told us that it was all about money, cash and hoes.

Now he’s giving pointed commentary to the New York Times. That’s a case study on life!

It’s also serious growth and life reflection in thirteen studio albums: Reasonable Doubt in 1996 all the way to 4:44 in 2017.

Think of it in Presidential terms: that’s Bill Clinton to Donald Trump.

In hoops terms that time frame was the Michael Jordan Chicago Bulls and their second three-peat all the way to the Golden State Warriors’ potential dynasty.

Those are some years put in!

“The album itself is one of the best bodies of work that we’ve seen in a long time,” DJ Clark Kent told me about Jay-Z’s 4:44 while on today’s episode of Scoop B Radio.

“So how can you say it’s lost anything when it’s still that shit. You might say that nobody is listening to the whole album, but instead songs that came off the album. But you know, the album was effective because his shows are sold out, which means people want to see him perform those records.”

DJ Clark Kent produced three tracks on Jay-Z’s Reasonable Doubt: “Brooklyn’s Finest”, which featured Notorious B.I.G., “Coming of Age” and “Cashmere Thoughts.” Kent thinks that Jay-Z’s 4:44 left an indelible mark on 2017. “His album worked especially because you look at other artists and they can’t go out and perform their whole album,” he said. “He can perform his whole album and people will say that was that sh*t,because the music does something to your soul, so you wanted to hear everything. You listened to his album because the body of work was special.”

DJ Clark Kent also produced My 1st Song, off Jay-Z’s The Black Album, a tribute to the beginning of his career. In the song, Jay-Z alludes to Clark Kent’s role in helping him break into the industry. My 1st Song was the last song on the album. And in the song, he states: ‘Clark Kent, that was good lookin’ out, n***a.’

Jay-Z doesn’t look to be slowing down anytime soon with the success of Roc Nation, Tidal and his own musical career.

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-177334" data-attachment-id="177334" data-permalink="https://respect-mag.com/2017/12/dj-clark-kent-jay-z-funny-47-year-old-guy-can-take-back-rap/drake-jay-z-2/" data-orig-file="https://i0.wp.com/respect-mag.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/12/Drake-Jay-Z.png?fit=680%2C440&ssl=1" data-orig-size="680,440" data-comments-opened="1" data-image-meta="{"aperture":"0","credit":"","camera":"","caption":"","created_timestamp":"0","copyright":"","focal_length":"0","iso":"0","shutter_speed":"0","title":"","orientation":"0"}" data-image-title="Drake Jay-Z" data-image-description="" data-image-caption="<p>Drake and Jay-Z.
But, here’s a legitimate question: Who in hip hop will carry carry the torch after Jay-Z? Is it Drake? “That’s a great question,” said DJ Clark Kent.

“All I know is he better be nice. Because if you saying Drake is the guy and Jay-Z put out an album that cleared everybody’s plate this year.”

Added DJ Clark Kent: “It’s funny that a 47-year-old guy can take back rap again.”

JAY-Z continues to dive deep with each layer he peels back for 4:44.

In the latest addition to the collection, “Adnis,” Mahershala Ali plays the role as a boxer and Danny Glover as the trainer in the transparent open letter that Hov seemingly wrote to his father. The black and white short features Ali working out while being encouraged by his trainer as he struggles to listen to every piece of advice leaving the trainer walking out in frustration and the boxer examining his choices while continuing to train.

As previously reported JAY-Z tapped the star to play a role in the then secret campaign to promote JAY-Z’s new album 4:44. The album has since been released and the full-length version of the visual is available to stream via Tidal.

In other JAY-Z news, Jay and wife Beyonce have been reportedly house hunting to find a new home suitable for their growing family and it looks like they may have found one.

According to the Los Angeles Times, the power couple is relocating from NYC to Bel-Air after reports surfaced that the couple made an incredible $90-million offer on a Bel Air spec house designed by spec mansion master Paul McClean.

If the deal closes, it would be the most expensive home sale in Los Angeles County this year, beating out the $85 million sale of David Geffen’s Malibu house to the owner of the Dodgers.
Check out the trailer for “Adnis” below.

JAY-Z has added a new video to the collection that supports his thoughts behind the lyrics and videos for his critically acclaimed album 4:44.

In the latest footnote for his recent short for “Kill JAY-Z,” Hov discusses that the entire song is about killing his ego, revealing that the lyrics are a conversation between who he really is and his public persona.

“It’s really about the ego. Killing off the ego so we can have this conversation in a place of vulnerability and honesty.”

The four-minute video also features other famous celebrities including Michael Che, Chris Rock, Trevor Noah, Van Jones and Charlamagne The God discussing the conflict of dealing with the ego but it’s significance in establishing your career.

“The ego is a funny thing because it’s what gets you on the stage,” Chris Rock said. “No one becomes famous thinking ‘hey I am the same as everyone else.'”

Jay also gives his perspective on the topic revealing that he had to have the conversation with himself so that he could have a “real conversation” about life and the things he’s done, both good and bad.

“JAY-Z, the public persona, couldn’t have this conversation, he has to be removed. So it’s really Shawn Carter speaking to JAY-Z, and he has to convince him to move aside.”

But while the rapper wants to kill his ego, he reveals he can’t fully do it.

“Some of the things I’ve done, you needed me. You need a bit of your ego at some point.”

Although Jay has been completely transparent about the majority of the lyrics on his song and album regarding his family, he has yet to discuss his feud with Kanye West. Only mentioning it in song as he spits, “You gave him 20 million without blinkin’ / He gave you 20 minutes on stage, f— was he thinkin’?” many fans are wondering if his take on his former friend will be discussed next.
